St. Columban prepares for closure
The formal decree
announding the suppression
of St. Columban parish by
the Diocese of London was
posted on the doors of St.
Columban Church after mass
this past Saturday evening.
The parishioners of St.
Columban are preparing
themselves for the final mass
to be said in the their
community. There is much to
he proud, in the faith lived,
shared and celebrated in this
unique community for the
past 173 years.
The sacrifices which their
ancestors made to build their
faith community here, and
which from this place spread
to the surrounding
communities, has been
shared by the more recent
sacrifices made by these
parishioners themselves, in
fighting to keep their faith
community from
annihilation. There will be a
few projects and gatherings
to mark these final days.

St. Columban
the last residing pastor at St.
Columban parish, came
recently to celebrate the
eucharist with the
parishioners. In the homily,
he reminded the parishioners
of the need to remember, to
mourn and to celebrate.
Sharing some memories of
the good times and sad times,
he evoked strong memories.
In linking to the readings of
the liturgy, he reminded the
people of the difficulties
experienced by the apostles
in the early church and urged
them not to give up on their
faith in Jesus just because of
the difficulties they are
experiencing at the present
time.
After the mass, everyone
gathered outdoors for
refreshments and a social
time together and to visit
with Father Hardy.
Bishop Anthony Daniels,
who served St. Columban
parish a few years ago before
being made a bishop by
coming on Sunday mornings
to celebrate eucharist at that
time, is coming this Sunday,
June 19. Mass time for this
occasion will be 10 a.m.
Everyone is welcome to
attend. A social time will be
held after this mass.
There are two final projects
to mark the closing of St.
Columban parish. One of the
projects is a St. Columban
parish cookbook, coordinated
by Fran Malone and Claire
Murray. Many past and
present parishioners
contributed recipes to the
cookbook.
The second project is a
video prepared by Angela
Smith. It will include the
final mass, pictures of all'
parts of the church as well as
pictures of parish events, past
and present. This project is
coordinated by Ricki
Vansteelandt and Karen
Menheere.
Both items will be
distributed as they are
available, the cookbook
during the summer and the
video by fall. Anyone
interested in obtaining either
is invited to contact the
respective coordinator.
The final celebration of St.
Columban Church is
scheduled to start on June 26
at I2:30 p.m. The St.
