Tuesday Tunes folks record
'Old Tyme' fiddle tunes on CD
By Susan Hundertmark
Expositor Editor
After five years of sharing
Old Tyme fiddle tunes with
the community Tuesday
afternoons at the Seaforth
Community Centre, the
Tuesday Tunes folks have
recorded their music on CD.
"We were near the end of
the season this year and I
thought we just had to be
recorded," says Tom Melady,
one of the originators of the
event.
"It is such a joy for me to
see all those fiddles playing
away. Most of us are self-
taught and don't want to be
professional musicians. We
just do it because we enjoy
it," he says.
While as many as 40
musicians, many of them
seniors, gather in Seaforth
every Tuesday throughout
the winter to share their
music and to perform to a
community hall packed with
as many as 300 dancing
seniors, 29 musicians came
together to record the CD,
Tuesday Tunes LIVE!
"Over the five years,
we've developed a fairly
steady core group and I was
always impressed by the
calibre and quality of the
musicians but the 29 are just
a portion of those who have
played," says Melady.
John Zettel, who along
with his wife June and Tom
Melady, produced the CD
which was recorded at
Schinbeins Music in
Mitchell, says more
musicians arrived to record
than were expected.
"When we asked for a
show of hands, only 15 put
up their hands but when we
got to the studio, there were
29," he says.
"It was fairly crowded in
the studio but we just lined
chairs around the wall. We
walked in at 1:30 p.m. and
walked out at 6:30 when
we'd recorded 29 songs,"
adds Melady.

John and June Zettel and Tom Melady hold up copies of the CD, Tuesday Tunes LIVE!,
a recording of 29 musicians performing the Old Tyme fiddle tunes they've shared at
Seaforth Community Centre for the past five years.
While the group didn't
organize the songs they'd
perform before arriving at
the studio, Melady says they
had played together for so
long that everything went
together smoothly on
recording day.
"We were well practised
so we just let `er rip. We'd
been playing together for 12
or 13 weeks," he says.
Just like they did each
Tuesday at the arena,
musicians decided on the
spot what feature song
they'd Iike to play and the
rest just followed along.
"Each time, we did a little
practice run so they could
get .the volumes right," says
Zettel.
Both Melady and Zettel
say the way they learned to
play is typical for the group.
Melady says he picked up
one of the guitars in his
family's home and began to
play so he could join in with
his mom Frances as she
played old tunes on the piano
with her brother.
Zettel says he picked up
his dad's fiddle and after
"squeaking and squawking"
for awhile, learned how to
play fiddle tunes while
listening to well-known
Canadian fiddler Don
Messer on the radio each
evening.
"When we were young,
music was a greater form of
entertainment because there
was less to do," he says.
Melady says two of the
musicians, Warren Whitmore
and Alec Murray are in their
90s and playing fiddle and
harmonica on a recording for
the first time.
"This is a preservation of
history here. This CD would
be a great thing to hand to a
grandchild or son or
daughter," says Melady.
The two say it's been
exciting watching the
musicians grow in their skill
and comfort level at
performance.
"Some have matured.
There are some you couldn't
get in front of a mike at first.
Then, they started coming up
with someone else and now
they walk right up to the
mike to play. With the skill
development, the shyness
goes away," says Zettlel.
The musicians come from
"far and wide" throughout
Huron, Perth and Middlesex
Counties.
They include Tom Melady,
John Zettel, Jack Herold,
Arnold Bruce, Jack Adair,
Warren Whitmore, Alec
Murray, Harold Knowles,
Gladys Van Egmond, Don
Kelly, Leen Van De Baan,
Andrew Patrick, Jim Love,
Don Nicholson, Harold
Mills, Jack Youngson, Jim
Delaney, Marie Flynn, Lois
Hodgins, Morley Snyder,
Dave Wall, Glen Diechert,
Gwen O'Rourke, Joan
Vandermey, Mary Coultes,
Mary Hehn, Keith Tyndall,
Doris Walker and Ethel
Adams.
While the CD was made
more for fun than profit,
Melady says each of the
musicians will receive a few
copies and will be able to
order more. Also, anyone
who attends Tuesday Tunes
will be able to buy a copy at
the event or call the Zettels
at 345-2226.
War reenactment, complete
with German uniform, will
occur, says Historical Society
By Cheryl Heath
Clinton News -Record Editor
The show will go on.
That is the word from
Debbie Bauer, president of
the Huron :.County
Historical Society, after' a
Crediton -based historian
and self -published author
wrote letters to the editor at
various local newspapers,
including The Huron
Expositor, which decried
the society's plans to host a
Second World War
reenactment, replete with an
actor donning an authentic
German uniform.
Though it has been
reported in broadcast media
that the show is cancelled,
that information is
erroneous, confirms Bauer.
"They are not actors
playing a role. They are
reenactors and this is a
passion for them," she says.
"The plan is to have several
people on site, depicting
various wars and eras."
The show, which is being
made possible in part
thanks to society member
Bill Dineen who is a
"reenactment enthusiast,"
will be as "authentic as it
can possibly be," says
Bauer.
Bauer notes society
members did hold a meeting
to discuss whether the
depiction of an authentic
German uniform would
cause conflict but decided it
would not.
She reports receiving
only positive feedback since
the letter to the editor was
published and that the only
person who has spoken
against the plan is the letter
writer.
"I haven't been contacted
by any war vets," she says.
"I have received some
feedback and it's all been
positive."
Bauer adds it is
unfortunate the letter writer
did not contact the sooty
first instead of the local
media.
The show will be a part of
the historical society's
annual dinner meeting,
which is set for Oct. 28 at
the Goderich branch of the
Royal Canadian Legion.
Letter writer W. Peter
Fydenchuk, a historical
society member, says he
wrote the letter in order to
facilitate debate on the
issue.
He says playing host to
an authentic German
uniform can be construed as
insensitive and that some
county residents fail to look
at the big picture when
making decisions.
