Payment terms, the four-year length of the deal, and preparation time allowances were set by the province earlier this year. The contract amounts to just over 10 per cent over four years for all teacher groups, with a split of two per cent this year, two per cent next September, 2.5 per cent in 2006, three per cent in 2007 and an extra 0.7 per cent to be negotiated. The hold-up for the Avon Maitland elementary teachers was the "grid," a term which refers to the formula by which salaries are determined for teachers with different experience levels. ETFO wanted their grid upgraded to equal that of the secondary school teachers. The grid was also a challenge with the Catholic board. According to board chair Bernard Murray, the new deals bring Huron -Perth teachers up to par with their Avon Maitland counterparts. "It was -not easy but I think it's good that they do have parity with the coterminous board," he said at the June 7 meeting. "And I think it's also good that, for the first time, we have a four-year deal." Sodium bromide tracer will show where water in sinkholes travels From Page 1 which will be able to monitor levels of the sodium bromide in the water by taking thousands of water samples, which Merry explained eliminates the need for expensive lab testing of the water. By knowing what the concentration of what the tracer is at the sinkhole and comparing how long it takes to travel to the wells will help the group understand a little more about the sinkholes and the area around them. "If water moves quickly from a sinkhole to a well, than we need to be more careful about the quality of water that goes into a sinkhole," Merry said. According to the Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority, a sinkhole is a depression in the land surface resulting from the dissolution of the bedrock, and the subsequent collapse of overlying soil and rock. Last year, a study of the sinkholes found that the potential for contaminating ground water is greater near sinkholes. The study also found that solutions to protect the water entering sinkholes would not be found overnight. In the past year, the group has drilled monitoring wells near sinkholes in Tuckersmith, Chiselhurst and Brussels to make measure the quality of the water people are getting from their own wells. Renovations improve access for disabled at Vanastra Rec Centre From Page 1 Bluewater. Smaller donations were also made, and fundraisers were undertaken to help meet the rest of the cost. A free public swim was held during the open house, and local dignitaries, and representativesfrom the major donors made short speeches. Also speaking was Angela Smith, a long-time user of the facility who says she and her mother, Pat Schellenberger, continued to come to the pool for therapeutic purposes after Schellenberger was in a car accident that left her confined to a wheelchair. They struggled with the doors prior to the renovations, Smith says, but chose to continue coming to Vanastra instead of going to more accessible facilities because of the Vanastra staff, who went to great lengths to help them. The staff also consulted them prior to making the changes described here, and a couple of their suggestions were followed through on. Smith says the changes make life a lot easier. In addition to the recent upgrades, the centre replaced its pool heaters a year ago and four years ago received a new filtration system. That system is currently functional but needs new JULY 29-31, 2005 www.townofseaforth.ca i tanks. The tanks were covered by warranty and were received by the manufacturer, but the manufacturer did not install them. The centre approached a contractor for an estimate on the cost of installation, as well as the cost of other fine tuning that needs to be done. The estimate was $15,000, but • the centre will approach other contractors for quotes, hoping to find a lower price. The changes that need to be made regard the compatibility of equipment and pipes the right size for the pool heaters, for instance. Berard says they would like to have those changes made within a year's time, but that the pool is currently operational. "We're managing but we wouldn't want to manage this way on a long-term basis," Berard says. In the future, Berard says she would also like to upgrade the centre's fitness room equipment, replace tables and chairs for the hall and upgrade doors. Though there has been some debate as to whether the pool should remain in operation, Berard says detractors don't realize how important this facility is to the community. Those who don't use the facility aren't likely to realize these benefits, she says. LAWN QUESTIONS? Organic Programs 4120 Available Acca Woenikap.' 524-2424 -Trust the Professionals -
