Seaforth-area women golden
at Seniors' Games triathlon
By Susan Hundertmark
Expositor Editor
While they didn't practise
too much and they took a
wrong turn during the
cycling segment, three
Seaforth-area women won
the seniors' triathlon in St.
Marys last week.
Joan Perrie, Druscilla
Leitch and Ethel Walker
competed for the first time
this year in a triathlon during
this year's Ontario Senior
Games.
Perrie, who did the
predicted swimming event,
was six seconds off of her
predicted time while
swimming at the Vanastra
Rec Centre pool.
Walker was 25 seconds off
of her predicted walk and
Leitch was 11 seconds off of
her predicted bike ride, both
in St. Marys.
The three beat two other
teams from St. Marys.
WEDDINGS

"It was partly luck," says
Perrie of the win. "But, it
was a lot of fun worth the
drive to St. Marys."

While the three participate
in a lot of fitness classes -
Leitch teaches both aerobics
and aqua aerobics locally -
and practise their events year
round, they didn't do a lot of
practising for the triathlon.
"Ethel walks a lot but she
just doesn't time herself,"
says Perrie.
"Joan timed me once when
I rode out to the golf course
and back twice," says Leitch.

While Perrie was guiding
Leitch with directions during
the cycling segment, the two
missed each other at one
cutoff and Leitch rode for 10
seconds in the wrong
direction.
Still, they had the best
times and won the event.
Because the provincial
competition Actifest is only
held every other year, the
women will not go on to
compete at a higher level
with the triathlon.
