Harmony Kings donate $2,000 towards Small Talk program
A donation of $2,000 from the
Seaforth Harmony Kings and the
Harmonize For Speech Foundation is
enabling the Huron Perth Preschool
Speech Language System to enhance
its services to parents of preschool
children in the Seaforth area.
Marlen Vincent, a member of the
Seaforth Community Hospital
Foundation and the Seaforth
Harmony Kings, applied for and
received a grant from the Harmonize
For Speech Foundation, the provin-
cial barbershop singers' organization
of which the Harmony Kings is a
member.
Vincent wanted the local hospital to
benefit and given that the motto for
the barbershop singers is "We sing so
that they can speak", the preschool
speech and language services was a
logical recipient.
Mary Cardinal, both site adminis-
trator at Seaforth hospital and pro-
gram director of the Complex
Continuing Care and Rehabilitation
Services for the Huron Perth
Healthcare Alliance, welcomed the
donation.
"These additional resources will
enhance existing services and support
access for parents seeking support for
their children," she said.
The hospital has also provided a

Mary Louise LaBerge, Small Talk
Coordinator, is delighted to be work-
ing with the Harmony Kings again.
"This is the second time since our
inception that we have been the recip-
ients of the Harmony Kings' generos-
ity. Four years ago their donation
allowed us to produce the Talk as You
Grow growth chart which helps par-
ents ensure their children's communi-
cation development is on track," she
said.
The funds will provide a significant„
boost in testing and therapy materials
for the Speech Language Pathologist
and Communicative Disorders
Assistant who provide service to the
Seaforth area.
Small Talk focuses on prevention,
identification and treatment of chil-
dren who are at risk for or demon-
strating a speech and language delay.
Funded by the provincial government
and administered by the Huron Perth
Healthcare Alliance, the program
provides services across both coun-
ties. One in 10 preschool children
have communication problems.
Parents can obtain more informa-
tion or refer a child to a Speech
Language Pathologist by calling 272-
8216 or toll-free at 1-866-333-7716
and asking for Small Talk.

Choosing the
Right Care
Facilities
For many seniors, staying in their
home might no longer be a viable
choice. Many seniors, after the death of
their life partner, might decide that it is
time to live in a long-term care facility.
For others, it might be a question of
health while for others, it is a question
of companionship.
No matter the reason, some of you
will consider the best options that
provide you with the utmost
independence possible. You may choose
to stay in your home and use _ a
combination of home and community
services. Others might seek care
facilities that offer certain types of
treatment and social supports. Finding
what is right for you will depend on
each individual situation and it is
important to consider some important
factors that will help you make an
informed choice.
First consider the location, its
convenience for you and your family.
Appearances are also important, so
check for clean and tidy bedrooms, day
room and kitchen. Check for a varied
and nutritious menu, special dietary

needs and possible flexible hours for -•
eating, as well as availability of snacks
between meals.
What is the resident -to -staff ratio
and does staff interact with residents on
a regular basis, in a friendly and caring
manner? There should be a variety of
group and individual activities,
opportunity to socialize and for privacy
when visitors come calling. Medical
care and individualized care are
important concerns, as well as the care
philosophy of the facility you are
visiting. Finally, check for safety
features such as smoke detectors, slip -
proof mats, grab rails and others.
