Sports Local man wins Kincardine derby By James Clark Kincardine News staff They just keep getting smaller and smaller. A 10.74 Ib. salmon caught by Frank Flynn, of Seaforth, has won the 20th annual Fish Kincardine Salmon Derby. This is the smallest salmon to ever win the derby. Dan Wilson, of Petrolia, won last year's derby with a 13.24 lb. salmon. The winning salmon in 2004 weighed 16.04 lbs. The record for the largest fish ever caught in the derby belongs to Richard Lawson, of Barrie. Lawson caught a 34.78 lb. chinook in 1992. Flynn was using a black Chilly Willy when he landed the fish at around 6 a.m. He was fishing with three friends down 40 ft. in about 150 ft. of water. It was beginners' luck for Flynn. This is the first fishing derby he has ever en t e r e d. "I think I will enter one again, it was a good $20 investment," he said. Flynn, who describes himself as an avid fisherman, won a Big Water fishing boat, motor and trailer package. He also won a rod and reel package for catch of the day on May 25. "I didn't think it would ever last," Flynn said, referring to the size of the fish. It almost didn't last. Different aspects of a good calf are that they arc not sick, their hair is shiny, their eyes and ears are alert, they are a suitable size for the show person, and they have good conformation. The election of officers was held: President —Mark McLean, Vice President - Curtis McNeil, Secretary — Katie Sparling, and Press Reporter — Natalie Klaver. Our second meeting was held May 9 at a newly -built calf barn near Staffa. We were shown different kinds of calf housing, and discussed which ones might be better or more effective. Some different housing options include individual hutches and free-range pen for multiple calves. Then our host, Gergcn Weersink, showed us his method of feeding his calves and explained his barn set up. The most recent club meeting was on May 28 at the Franken farm. Members were invited to 1-11 Dairy Calf ( lull bring their heifer projects, as it was our clipping and showmanship day. Barry Quickfall demonstrated how to trim hooves, and offered his service free of charge to any members who wanted to have hooves trimmed on their 4-H project calves. We clipped our calves as we would for a show, and were given tips and rules of how to lead our calves in a show ring. We held our own little show where we practised how we would lead in the show ring. So far, our dairy calf club has had a lot of fun and learned lots.
