Refrigeration, Gas & Plumbing Correspondents NHL lockout turns linesman into substitute school teacher By Jason Middleton Expositor Staff What's the difference between being a National Hockey League linesman and a teacher at a high school? That's something that NHL linesman Scott Driscoll has learned in the past five months as he has been out of a job since the general managers in the NHL imposed a lockout on its players last fall. "If a hockey player gets on your nerves, you can give them a penalty or get in their way," said Driscoll during a telephone interview from his Guelph home. "You can't do that with students." During the first three or four months of the lockout, Driscoll, who was born and raised in Seaforth, said that he was training on a daily basis and played hockey to keep his legs strong. "It became apparent around Christmas things were not looking good and I better start pursuing something in the employment field," he said. So, Driscoll decided to dust off his teacher's college diploma and apply to become a substitute teacher in the Guelph area. In January, Driscoll was hired to become a substitute teacher and three weeks later he was hired as a temporary math teacher at the school where his wife, Coleen, works as a teacher. After the teacher he took over for came back, Driscoll became a substitute teacher again only to be re -hired as a math teacher at the same school in mid-April. Although many of the schools students were aware that Driscoll's wife worked at the school, many were surprised when the linesman turned teacher started working at their school. "Word spread pretty fast, but to them I was just a teacher and that's all I really want to be," Driscoll said. In the past, Driscoll had been a guest speaker at the school talking to the students about the importance of education, talking about his career and about the violence in hockey. As for the NHL, Driscoll said that he hopes a settlement. comes soon but he doesn't have much to say about it. "It's disappointing. I never thought it would come to cancelling an entire season," he said, adding he thought it would be similar to the 1994 lockout where the players and owners came to an agreement and never lost the season. "It's disappointing, but it's big business and they are doing what they have to do," Driscoll said. After talking to people at the charity games he's officiated or at the guest speaking engagements he's done, Driscoll said that he has been asked what he's doing with all his spare time now. The truth, Driscoll said, is that he's busier now than he has ever been. He said that the silver lining to the lockout is that he is able to be with his family. In the winter, Driscoll coached his nine-year-old son's hockey team and is now coaching his baseball team. He also took his younger son skating every week and was around for his daughter's recent birthday. Usually, Driscoll said, he'd be involved in officiating playoff games at this time of the year. June 1. 2005-13 Cavan congregation invited to worship musical next Sunday Cavan United Church started their Sunday service with a short hymn sing. The sermon was titled "Law and Order." Jim and Diane Rapson were the greeters and collectors. There will be no service at Cavan next Sunday, June 5 as we are invited to attend Northside when their junior and senior choirs present "They All Sang Jesus," a worship musical. Sunday, June 12, communion will be held at both churches. Rev. John Gould informed us that in September he will be marrying Natalie Sands.
