Parish celebrates community with family meal
The St. Columban parish
family gathered to celebrate
their community with a family
meal in the parish hall.
Visiting and conversation took
priority as people enjoyed this
moment together.
Anne Murray welcomed
everyone. Mary Ryan led
those assembled in grace
before meals and a special
blessing for Gilbert and Ricki
Vansteelandt who are
celebrating their 35th wedding
anniversary. Tom Burke was
wished a "Happy Birthday" in
song by those gathered.
Melissa Murray gave a
presentation on the poverty
awareness trip made to the
Dominican Republic in
February. The presentation
concentrated on Consuelo, our
sister parish, and the bateys of
the sugar cane areas.
The typical home is a shack
made of tin and steel pieces. It
showed the schools and
housing in Consuelo, and
made us aware of the hard life
of the people there.
Father Joe Hardy, a former
pastor, came for a visit. The
delicious meal, made and
served by Grace Campbell
and her helpers, was
thoroughly enjoyed by all, and
the visiting and conversation
carried on afterwards as
people enjoyed the time spent
together.
A number of festivities have
been held to celebrate the
upcoming marriage of Sharon
Kelly, daughter of Irene and
Don Kelly, to Gerald Foran,
son of Helen Foran, of Lucan.
A recent gathering of family
members, relatives,
neighbours and friends,
hosted by Kim Buchanan and
other members of the wedding
party, was held at St.
Columban Parish Hall.
This past weekend, Irene
and Don Kelly hosted an
engagement party at their
farm with hay rides, games,
St. Columban
singing and dancing and a
barbecue. Sharon and
Gerald's marriage will be
celebrated in August in
Dublin.
Allan Murray hosted 18 of
the local "Red Hat Chicks" of
the Seaforth area, including
Mary Catherine Lane, Claire
Murray, and Ang Swart from
St. Columban.
Allan took thein up in twos
in his airplane for a ride,
making ¶a big circle over the
local area and showing the
different ladies where they
lived. The ladies thoroughly
enjoyed the experience, being
able to see Lake Huron from
this area when you are up in
the plane, as well as all the
beautiful scenery of this
locale.

eight communities in the region to receive a bench in memory of victims of impaired
driving.
Neil and Glenda Murray, have
returned from a recent trip to
France made along with other
students from St. Michael
High School, Stratford.
Part of the experience was
being billeted with local
families. While there with the
families they were expected to
practise their use of the
French language.
They made many tours
while staying in Rouen and
Paris. They visited the Eiffel
Tower, the Arc de Triumph,
the Louvre, and had a tour of
the River of Paris.
One of the highlights was a
visit to Dieppe and Versailles.
There they visited the
Canadian cemeteries of the
Canadians who died in the
World Wars. They report that
the cemeteries are amazing in
that they are beautiful and so
very well kept.
Baseball has been the most
recent activity for the students
at St. Columban School. Six
school teams comprised of
two junior teams of Grades 5
and 6 girls and Grade 5 and 6
boys, and four senior teams
consisting of Grade 7 girls',
Grade 7 boys', Grade 8 girls'
and Grade 8 boys' teams have
been enjoying the sport.
All the teams participated at
the system tournament held
recently in Stratford, and
while none of the teams came
away winners, they all played
and enjoyed a great day of
sportsmanship.
The students recently
participated in a special Mass
in honour of Mary, the Mother
of Jesus. Traditionally, May is
the month of Our Lady, and
the students honour her with a
crowning of flowers as our
Mother and Queen.
Six Grade 8 students
participated in a math
competition held at St.
Joseph's parish hall in
Stratford. Chelsea Flanagan
placed third.
Recent theme days included
a "Sucker Day," and also a
"Twin or Triplet Day." Many
students teamed up in twos
and threes and dressed alike
as twins or triplets for the day.
The students are now
concentrating on their track
and field skills to prepare for
upcoming competitions.
