THE HURON EXPOSITOR, June 1. 2005-5
Student looks forward to summer in Seaforth
Hello there, Seaforth. The
task before me is to
introduce my tall and rotund
self in the short time before
the fine Huron Expositor
goes to press. So here goes.
My name is Ben. That
picture you see along with it
in this space is mine, and you
may be surprised to know
that it hasn't been surgically
altered.
No Botox, no cheek
implants, no face lifts. What
you see is basically what
God gave me, plus 100 extra
pounds or so - and no, you're
not imagining things. I really
am that handsome.
Just kidding.
What I should have told
you by now is that we might
be seeing more of each other
this summer.
I'll be filling in for Jason
and Susan during their much -
deserved vacations, serving
as a reporter/photographer
for this and three other Sun
Media papers until the end of
August.
My thanks go out to
Expositor publisher Tom
Williscraft for graciously
choosing to have me on
board in the coming months,
as well as everyone else at
the Seaforth office for
putting up with me.
Thanks also to you, dear
reader, for surrendering part
of your week to peruse my

Vanastra Rec boasts
municipality's best,
only indoor pool
To the Editor,
I would like to respond to
an article carried in the paper
on April 13 of this year under
the heading "Huron East
questions lifespan of rec
centre at Vanastra as pool
repaired."
In this article the Huron
East council made some
comments that questioned the
viability and usefulness of
the Vanastra Recreation
Facility.
As a user of the facility
and member of the Vanastra
Recreation Committee, I
found these comments to be
unhelpful in our efforts to
promote our facility to the
community and demeaning to
the committee and staff of
the facility who strive to
provide the best recreation
programs and indoor pool
that we can with our limited
budget.
Yes, it may be "old" as
Deputy -Mayor MacLellan
said, but we are certainly the
best indoor pool facility in
the municipality (read only
indoor pool facility), and
rather than knocking our
efforts to improve and
prolong the life of the facility
perhaps council could
become supporters and
promoters of their municipal
pool.
The $40,000 spent on
resurfacing the pool and
creating a change room for
the physically challenged
have greatly added to the
lifespan and user friendliness
of the centre.
We have worked with
faulty equipment and
contradictory advice on how
to fix our filtration problems
and still managed to provide
the recreational services that
so benefit our community.
I think that before you talk
about "mothballing our
facility" you had better
research the costs, time, and
inter -community bickering
over location you will be
faced with when trying to
build a new state of the art
facility. which like the big
new pools in Wingham and
Goderich, will still operate in
the red.
I wonder how much
Deputy -Mayor MacLellan
plans to raise the taxes so
that he can have the millions
of dollars required to build
such "a new proper building
in 10 years"?
The Lions club and the
people of Vanastra and
surrounding community have
supported the Vanastra pool
financially and through their
attendance.
I think it is time that
council got fully behind
recreation in our municipality
and the work your employees
and committees put into our
recreational programs.
The only message that
comes out of the type of
comments made by council
quoted in this article is that
Vanastra Pool will soon be
closing, which makes it
really hard to sell
memberships and get support
and are, hopefully,
completely untrue.
The Vanastra Recreation
Centre would like to invite
everyone to tour our facility
at an Open House on
Thursday, June 9 from 10
a.m. to 8 p.m.
There will be a ribbon
cutting at 10 a.m, free
swimming in our newly -
resurfaced pool from 6:30 - 8
p.m. and enjoy cake and ice
cream from 7-8 p.m. to
celebrate our recent
improvements!

words.
You're probably wondering
if I'm a journalism student,
and I have to confess that I'm
not. I'm actually a history
major at Brock University in
St. Catharines, Ont., and plan
to go onto "J school," as it's
called, after I'm done there.
Although I don't have any
formal journalism training, 1
do have a fair bit of
experience working at local
newspapers.
My work has appeared in
Exeter's Times -Advocate,
Grand Bend's The
Lakeshore Advance, and
more recently the Clinton
News -Record.
I've also done some pro-
bono writing for a number of
websites, and a couple of
music magazines.
One of them, a religious
publication called Cross
Rhythms, is based out of the
United Kingdom. Another,
called FEED, has also
published some short articles
of mine, in spite of the fact
that I know the square root of

1 have to confess I don't
know a whole lot about your
little burg either, but that will
change as time goes on.
Please feel free to send any
story ideas or tips about
coming events to the
Expositor office, as my

things to write about in a

Anyway, that's about all I

look forward to seeing you
around, Seaforthians. Have a

Bayed windows, gables and french doors give this family home a look
of traditional elegance. The side -entry garage, with two decorative
widows facing thc street, also adds to its visual appeal. Double front
doors make a grand entrance from the covered veranda into a two-
storey foyer. Directly ahead, an angled staircase climbs to thc bed-
room level. To the right, is the formal living room with a bayed win-
dow. a sloping ceiling and a gas fireplace with decorative windows
above. The adjoining dining room has french doors that open to a rear
patio and an alcove for a buffet. A pocket door shuts off the kitchen
when desired. At the other side of the foyer arc the powder room and
a study with a closet. A short hall leads to the laundry, which has
access to the double garage.
