Members of council 'amazed and impressed'
with recent visit to Seaforth's medical centre
By Susan Hundertmark
Expositor Editor
A recent visit to the
Seaforth Medical Clinic has
left members of Huron East
council "amazed and
impressed" by the facelift it's
receiving from its new
administration, the Seaforth
Community Hospital Trust.
"They really have done an
amazing job. I can't praise
them enough," said Deputy -
Mayor Bernie MacLellan at
last week's council meeting.
MacLellan said he and
Mayor Joe Seili asked to tour
the facility "because we
wanted to know how our
money was being spent."
Huron East council agreed
last November give $50,000
a year for two years towards
renovations to the 25 -year-
old clinic.
Since then, the SCH trust,
which took over management
of the clinic and the
hospital's 60 acres of
agricultural land in March,
has built a circular driveway
at the entrance of the clinic,
installed new carpeting and
tiling throughout the centre,
bought new furniture and
examination tables, given the
facility a new paint job and
installed new window
coverings and signing for the
building.
As well, it has created a
meeting room for the family
health team downstairs,
replaced a non-functional
water softener, cleaned the
mechanical rooms,
implemented a fire safety
plan and locked up
hazardous materials.
Plans still include new
roofing for the building, an
assessment of the heating
and cooling system and a
new computer system for the
medical centre that will
handle the scheduling, billing
and charts.
"The building has been
deteriorating as a result of
aging and a lot of things had
reached the end of their
economic life," said SCH
trust chair Ron Lavoie.
Correspondents
"We're trying to have a
facility the community is
proud of," he said during a
phone interview last week.
Seili told council that
Lavoie and trust member Alf
Ross are "miracle workers."
"It's a 25 -year-old building
but now it looks new again.
It's a lot cleaner and
brighter," he said.
MacLellan said the circular
driveway has made the
centre much more accessible
to patients and that doctors
are giving the changes "their
thumbs up."
He added that while
doctors were seeing 1,200
patients a month in January,
those numbers have climbed
to 2,000 since the doctors no
longer have to worry about
administering the building.
"This was a good move for
Huron East," said
MacLellan.
Seili agreed, adding "If we
hadn't stepped up to the
plate, we might not have
gotten what we did with the
family health team."
Queensway residents enjoy fun and
fitness outside on recent mild day
Fun and Fitness started
the week for residents at
Queensway Nursing and
Retirement residence in
Hensall recently as they
worked their way through
the exercise routine. One
mild day recnetly found the
entire group doing their
workout on the deck,
basking in the sunny
morning and light breeze.
Monday afternoon the
Hensall United church
women provided assistance
and prizes for residents at
bingo.
Tuesday morning,
volunteer Edna Dietz
assisted at breakfast group,
offering coffee and
conversation to the eight
residents dining on
pancakes, sausage, syrup,
melons, juice, coffee and tea.
Pastor Fred Darke of
Queensway
Hensall United Church led

with Belva Fuss as volunteer
pianist. Marg Cole assisted

Residents along with
family members and several
friends took part in a
wonderful outing to
Bayfield's Blue Harbour
Restaurant on Wednesday,
planned by Retirement
Residence Director, Maxine
Curry. The delicious meal
combined with congenial
company made for a very
successful trip.
Later in the afternoon,
family council and Julie
Keagan held their monthly
meeting.
Wednesday afternoon
Andrea McGrath, daughter of
Larry and Dianne McGrath,
graduated April 7, 2005 from
Ontario Police College,
Aylmer. Her badge was
proudly presented by her
uncle, Bill McGrath, a retired
officer with the Halton
Regional Police. Andrea has
accepted a position with the
London Police Services.
Congratulations from Mom,
Dad, Laura and Geoff, Greg,
Grandma Butt and Grandma
McGrath, family/and friends.
