Environmental attitudes
change after local Cubs
participate in Climate
Change Challenge
By Jason Middleton
Expositor Staff
Since beginning Scouts
Canada's Climate Change
Challenge, 10 -year-old Jessie
James, of Seaforth, started
telling her friends where they
should put their gum when
they are finished with it.
James said that she now
stops her friends from litter-
ing at school.
"Sometimes they'll throw
their gum out on the ground
or something and I'll say
`Pick that up,"' James said.
James, a member of the
Seaforth Cubs, explained that
if you don't stop littering
when you are a kid, when
you are older, the environ-
ment will only get worse.
"Nothing will change,"
James said.
The Seaforth Cubs are tak-
ing advantage of a new
Scouts Canada program
which educates children
about the dangers of climate
change and what can be done
to prevent or minimize it.

For the past month, the
group made up of eight to 11
year-olds, have participated
in the Climate Change
Challenge and have complet
ed a series of experiments
games and activities which
have educated them abou
environmental issues.
Cubs leaders Susi
Raczkevi-Ryan and Derrick
Rath decided to tackle th
Climate Change Challeng
this year after Raczkevi
Ryan saw it advertised on the
Scouts Canada Web site.
Raczkevi-Ryan said that
this challenge is good
because it is something that
she has done at home with
her children.
Cub member Melissa
Pletsch, 10, of Seaforth, said
that she learned from the
challenge that biking is better
for the environment than
driving a car everywhere.
She said that one of her
favourite things with the
challenge was doing the
experiments.
In the Climate Change
Challenge, the Cubs have
learned about what climate
change is,,how to save ener-
gy, how to limit waste and
what renewable energy is.
With each lesson, the group
had been doing activities that
test solar power, wind power
and even how to make the
most out of energy at home.
In one activity, the group
boiled 10 cups of water in a
pot with its lid on and then
made hot chocolate.
Following that, the group
then boiled the same amount
of water without a lid on. The
group found it took five min-
utes longer to boil the water
with no lid on the pot.
While participating in the
challenge, the children have
earned badges in recycling,
home repair, cycling. family
helper, world conservation
and a Climate Change
Challenge crest.
The children also partici-
pated in the Energy Sleuth
Game, where they search
their house to make sure they
are doing everything they can
to help the environment.
Similar to the federal gov-
ernment's One Tonne
Challenge. the children will
then take their information
collected in the game and
enter it into the energy sleuth
calculator are rated on how
environmentally friendly
their home is.
"Climate change is a global
concern, which may signifi-
cantly affect the future of our
young people," a statement
on the Scouts Canada Web
site said. "Evidence suggests
human activities arc impact-
ing our climate now: result-
ing in warmer temperatures.
frequent severe storms.
droughts and forest fires."
