public service that is well
used and well represented,"
said Forrest of the compost
facility.
Mayor Joe Seili said
residents in the Brussels arca
began self -policing a compost
facility in that area after they
were told it could close.
"I think we'd like to keep it
open but we want it to cost as
little as possible," added
MacLellan, who asked
Forrest to bring back ideas of
where the site could be
moved to.
Forrest responded he'd try
but added, "We've exhausted
all our locations."

Just follow the footprints
Nine Huron East trails are painted and ready for walking
By Susan Hundertmark
Expositor Editor
Wildlife footprints painted
throughout Seaforth, Vanastra
and Brussels are encouraging
residents to lace up their
sneakers and walk.
Nine trails, three in each
urban area of Huron East,
have been marked during the
last week through a
municipal recreation project,
funded by Huron East, the
Huron County Health Unit
and the province.
Grants of $1,500 each
came from the municipality
and Take Heart Huron (the
health unit) and of $8,700
came from the Ministry of
Tourism and Recreation's
Communities in Action
program for the trails.
"Everything's come
together and we now have
guided trails in each
community. Now everyone
can get out there and walk,"
says Lissa Berard, manager
of the Vanastra Recreation
Centre.
Along with the trails, a
brochure will soon be
available containing the route
of each trail and descriptions
of warm-up stretches and
proper walking techniques.
As well a short-term
incentive program will offer
free gifts to walkers who
complete the three trails in
each community.
Anyone who walks all
three trails in one community
will receive a free water
Tylor Marion and Jade Maxwell, both Grade 8 students at
Seaforth Public School, help to paint wildlife prints to
mark one of three walking trails through Seaforth.
bottle, those who walk six
trails will get a belt to hold
the water bottle and those
who walk all nine will
receive a free pedometre.
"We really want to
encourage people to walk all
nine trails throughout Huron
East but we have more water
bottles since we think more
people will walk the three in
their own communities," says
Berard.
While the project's focus is
to improve fitness levels
throughout Huron East, the
project is also aimed at
providing an activity for
tourists.
In Seaforth, the one -
kilometre trail goes between
town hall and Lions Park and
the three -kilometre trail goes
from the arena through
Seaforth's residential area
including its nursing homes
and churches.
The five -kilometre trail
runs down Main Street from
the arena to Van Egmond
House, back down Main
Street to Crombie Street, over
to Coleman Street to
Goderich Street, up to the
hospital, down Alexander
Street over to Chalk Street
and up past Seaforth Public
School to the arena.
In Brussels, the one
kilometre trail travels around
the Brussels, Morris and
Grey Community Centre, the
three -kilometre trail runs
along the south bank of the
Maitland River and the five -
kilometre trail goes along the
north bank of the river.
In Vanastra, the one -
kilometre trail goes around
the recreation centre
complex, the three -kilometre
trail runs through the
residential area and the five -
kilometre trail goes through
both residential and industrial
sections of the community.
Economic development
officer Ralph Laviolette says
a walking group has already
begun to use the trails in
Brussels each morning.
And, in Seaforth, he says
the hospital has expressed
interest in using the trails as
part of its physiotherapy and
rehabilitation program.
The next phase of the trail
project, which could be
completed next year, will be
exercise stations along the
route.
"We would be interested in
how the exercise stations
could be connected with the
health centre," says Ralph
Laviolette, president of the
Seaforth Community
Hospital Foundation.
New location for compost facility
sought after council receives petition
By Susan Hundertmark
Expositor Editor
After receiving a petition
with more than 50 signatures,
Huron East is looking at
moving the compost facility
in Harpurhey.
While Public Works
Coordinator John Forrest
reccommended the site be
closed permanently and
replaced by spring and fall
pick-ups of brush and yard
waste, council was not so
quick last Tuesday to shut
down the service entirely.
"1 have talked to a lot of
people and there are going to
he some very upset if we
close it. They need
somewhere to put their grass
cuttings at least," said
Seaforth Coun. Joe Steffler.
"1 don't think we're that
landlocked that we can't find
somewhere," he said.
While Seaforth has offered
a compost facility for 18
years at different locations
throughout town, thc lastest
site became controversial
after a fire at the site engulfed
the village in smoke, a week
after a controlled burn was
held there by the
municipality.
Before it was moved to
Harpurhey on Hannah Line
by the town lagoon in the fall
of 2004, the compost facility
was located near the Welsh
Street well, a site that became
impossible after new
wellhead protection
legislation was implemented
by the province.
The controlled burn was
held April 11 "as wind
conditions were blowing
away from any residential
area and ground conditions
were right," said Forrest in
his report to council.
The following Saturday,
the compost facility was
found to again be on fire, and
this time out of control. The
Seaforth fire department was
called to the scene and spent
three hours putting out the
fire.
The petition from
Harpurhey residents protested
the "dangerous smoke levels
and unattended fires at
Harpurhey." -
A doctor's note from
resident Jim Kelly was also
sent to the municipality
detailing his family's
problems with smoke
inhalation during the day of
the out -of -control fire.
"We did not set it on fire
that time. It was a major fire
and out of control before we
knew it," said Forrest, who
added that the large pile of
brush had been lit by others a
few times.
"Maybe people are lighting
it thinking that's what they're
supposed to do?" asked Grey
Coun. Mark Beaven.
Beaven asked if moving
the facility to the Walton
landfill, which is attended,
would solve the problem.
McKillop Coun. Sharon
McClure responded that
there's not enough room at
the landfill for the compost
from all of Huron East.
"Mid -Huron is geared for
that," she said.
Deputy -Mayor Bernie
MacLellan agreed saying that
if the municipality doesn't
provide the service,
ratepayers can truck their
compost and yard waste to
the area landfill site and
dispose of it for $10 a
truckload.
McKillop Coun. Ferg Kelly
said a compost facility is a
service the municipality
should provide "at least in the
urban areas."
Forrest added that if some
type of service isn't provided,
he's afraid brush will end up
filling roadside ditches.
