Dublin bowler qualifies
for national tournament
By Marc Hulet
Mitchell Advocate Staff
Local bowler Leslie Groot
has qualified for the national
finals of the Masters Bowlers
Association, which will be
held in Red Deer, Alberta
from July 2-7.
Eight teams of five women
will be competing in the
event, with teams coming
from British Columbia,
Saskatchewan, Manitoba,
Quebec, Newfoundland,
Northern Ontario, as well as
Southern Ontario, whom
Groot will be representing.
Groot, who has been
bowling for 30 years,
qualified for the team for the
first time after accumulating
the third best score out of
about 200 women in the
Master Bowlers Association
of Ontario during the
bowling season.
"It wasn't like you finish in
the top one at one tournament.
and `boom' you go," she
said. "It's the accumulation
of your tournament scores
throughout the season."
Going into the final
tournament of the season in
Hamilton, Groot sat in third
place and was one of only
two in the top five going into
the event who remained there
when the dust settled.
"There was a lot of
pressure in the last few

games," she said. "I've been
in the Masters since 1993 and
this was the first time I was
even close (to moving on to
nationals)."
She has been to the
provincial finals at least 20
times.
Groot, who started bowling
after her parents built a
bowling centre in
Molesworth, said the biggest
challenge she has is
maintaining a solid score
because her average (232) is
so high.
Scoring for the Masters is
based on pins above average,
which means bowlers get
points for each pin they
knock down after they have
reached their average.
Groot, of RR 1 Dublin, is
looking forward to both the
nationals and the trip to
Alberta, which will be the
first Canadian province she
has visited.
"The trip is going to be a
lot of fun and fellowship,"
she said. "1 just want to do
my best, have fun, and
experience something I may
never get to do again."
Groot said she was hoping
to see a fair bit of Alberta,
but she will be bowling four
of the five days she is there.
"I don't think there'll be
much time for sightseeing,"
she said.
Groot's teammates for the
national tournament bowl in
London, Smiths Falls,
Kitchener and Barrie. The
team's coach is from
Grimsby.
