Area high schools to send 30 students
to WOSSAA track and field competition
By Jennifer Hubbard
News -Record Staff
More than 30 area students
are taking on the next level
of track and field competition
this week after finishing in
the top six at last week's
Huron -Perth meet.
Clinton's two high schools
- Central Huron and St.
Anne's - sent a number of
athletes in a variety of events
to the Western Ontario
Secondary Schools Athletic
Association (WOSSAA)
meet May 17-18 at the
University of Western
Ontario's TD Waterhouse
Stadium in London.
Looking back at the May
10-11 bi-county meet hosted
by Goderich District
Collegiate Institute (GDCI),
St. Anne's coach Baird
Robinson said he was
"pleased with how our
numbers fared."
The top six Huron -Perth
finishers moved on to the
WOSSAA meet.
And while the Eagles
team's strengths are more
obvious on the track,
Robinson anticipated
impressive results from a few
field athletes as well.
"I think we have a number
of kids that should be able to
get to the next level - 8 or 9
depending if things break
well for us," he commented.
"There's always a little luck
factored into these
competitions because all of
the kids have to get out there
and do their best on the same
day.
"It's a bit of a crap shoot. A
lot of things can happen

CHSS coach Jim Cook also
predicted a few top finishes
among his school's 15
athletes.
"Competition is strong in
London and we'll have to
wait and see," he explained.
"We're getting stronger as a
team and there has been a lot
of improvement this year."
Athletes with the five top
WOSSAA scores will move
on to western Ontario
regionals - an extra step of
high school competition
unique to track and field - in
Sarnia May 27-28. The top
four athletes will then attend
the Ontario Federation of
Schools Athletic Association
(OFSAA) championships in
Windsor during the first
weekend of June.
"The western region is
typically the strongest in the
province for all sports. If you
get out the western region by
and large you will do well at
OFSAA," Robinson added.
Seaforth-area athletes in
the meet included Matt
Fisher, of Central Huron
Secondary School, who came
third in junior men's 300 -
metre hurdle and fifth in the
junior men's 200 -metre dash.
Caleb Ringenberg, of
Central Huron came fifth in
the midget men's 800 -metre
run, tying with Grant Bolton,
also of Central Huron.
Bolton also came fifth in
the midget men's 1500 -metre
run.
Luke Veens, of St. Anne's
Secondary School, came fifth
in the senior men's 3000 -
metre run and seventh in the
senior men's high jump.
