Huron East council voted against going ahead with the proposed new location for a skate park at last Tuesday's meeting. Mayor Joe Seili instructed Seaforth Coun. Lou Maloney, who is a member of the arena board, to take the issue back to the Seaforth arena board for a cheaper solution. "It seems that we're stuck on a chainlink fence. We could make a good strong fence for a lot less money," he said. Deputy -Mayor Bernie MacLellan suggested Maloney take a copy of the two tenders for fencing, which range around the $5,500 mark to the arena board "so they understand why we're questioning them." Tuckersmith Coun. Larry McGrath again spoke against the new location for the skate park, saying the kids using the park do not want to be located at the arena. "They want to be downtown," he said. However, Maloney rebutted McGrath, saying that John and Susie Ryan, who organized the first skate park behind town hall, are happy with the new location. "I don't know where you're getting your information," he told McGrath. Maloney added that the new park is two or three times bigger than the first park, which would also add to its popularity. "The size was a complaint in the first one," he said. Both McGrath and MacLellan asked if the park can operate for a year without the chainlink fence so that interest in the new location can be gauged. But, Clerk -Administrator Jack McLachlan pointed out that the only way the arena board would agree to the Correspondents location of the skate park in the parking lot was with a fence. "I'd hate to have a $5,000 fence sitting there if none of the kids are using it. I'd like to see a temporary snow fence to keep the cars safe and if the kids are using it on a daily basis, you can tell me I'm stupid and I'll appreciate that,." said McGrath. Brussels Coun. Frank Stretton pointed out that a snow fence might not be very safe. MacLellan mused that it was too bad the Seaforth hospital wasn't closer to the downtown. "They have some land and then it would be one-stop shopping," he joked. Seili informed council that a decision had to be made very soon since a promise was made to replace the park in time for the summer. "We all voted to close it so we're all going to vote to put it back. I want an answer by the next meeting," he said. Local vets recall their role in the Second World War My column this week is a continuation of the VE Day article in another part of this paper. I know they don't look on themselves as Heroes, but think about it! To go to sea in the winter or summer for that matter knowing that U-boats are out there wanting to sink your ship, that's a hero. Or to be part of a crew flying over enemy territory through the flak that at any moment could knock you out of the sky, that's a hero. Or to be a Para jumping behind enemy lines and being shot at before hitting the ground, that's a hero. Or the soldiers attacking well dug -in troops and having their friends falling around them as the attack advances, they're also heroes. Of course, they also were bombing, shelling and firing on the enemy, says an air force vet. A local pilot in his squadron was awarded the first Victoria Cross (VC) to the Air Force in the Second Seaforth Legion World War. Another had his aircraft hit over France and the crew was told they may have to ditch in the water. The pilot kept it in the air but the plane crashed on land killing two and the rest were badly injured. Earning one's wings in the Air Force was a proud and happy event , although one local veteran recalls happy and fun times when he was in convalescence hospitals in England and Canada. One of our Army vets recalls his engineer company putting the first Bailey bridge over the Rhine. Another remembers guarding German POWs in Holland. One of our British vets who was with the signal corps was laying communication wire in Holland when a shot was fired through the windshield grazing the head of his officer. It came from an enemy up one of the telephone poles and attempted to cut the lines that the corps had laid earlier. One of our younger vets came home to Seaforth and finished high school while still in uniform. I would be remiss not to mention those who paid the supreme sacrifice and those who have passed on since 1945. "We will remember them." On Saturday morning a group of about 25 from the Seaforth branch attended a liberation service at the Dutch Reform Church in Exeter. It was a memorable service which brought tears to many eyes. Later we had lunch and were entertained by a chorus and sing a long. Hello to all to our shut-ins at home, Maplewood and the Manor. They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old.
