Seniors sign petition protesting province's
proposed changes to drug benefit program
By Susan Hundertmark
Expositor Editor
More than 600 Huron
County seniors have signed a
petition that arrives
in Queen's Park
today (May 11) to
protest proposed
changes to the
Ontario Drug Benefit
program.
Pharmacists
throughout Huron
have been collecting
names during the past
two weeks in a provincial
campaign to ask for a place at
the table with the province for
both pharmacists and those
affected by the proposed
changes. The petition gath-
ered 511,000 across the
province.
"This peti-
tion is not intended
to be an angry thing -
it's just meant to be a
request to let us pro-
vide some input,"
says Huron County
Pharmacists'
Association presi-
dent Dan Stringer, of
Goderich.

As a pharmacist at
PharmaPlus in Goderich,
Stringer says he received an
enthusiastic response from
local seniors to the petition.
"We had people coming in
looking for the petition to
sign. 1 hope every pharmacy
in Huron got involved," he
says.
While phar-
macists are not
certain about
the details of
the proposed
changes,
Stringer says
they're con-
cerned that
they've heard
the changes are
based on a
"reference -
based pricing"
system used in
British
Columbia, also
known as med-
icine rationing, which would
see the government paying
for the cheapest drug in a
range of similar drugs. If
patients needed another drug
in the same category, they
would be forced to pay out of
pocket for it.
"The fear is that if a drug
doesn't work for someone,
they will have to pay for a
more expensive product if the
government strips down the
drug plan. Seniors on a fixed
income are already seeing a
decline in their standard of
living with increased hydro
rates and the new health tax,"
he says.
A pamphlet from the
Ontario Pharmacists'
Association that accompanied
the petition says the
province's pharmacists are
"gravely concerned about cut-
backs now
under consid-
eration by the
Ontario gov-
ernment."
T h e
"Pharmacists
Care" cam-
paign is advo-
cating for the
"most vulner-
able" includ-
ing seniors
and low
income earn-
ers.
Stringer
says that the
issue affects
everyone since everyone will
eventually become a senior.
"I'd like to know there's
going to be a good drug plan
for me when I'm a senior," he
says.
Shaukat Mangalji, of
Keatings Pharmacy in
Seaforth, says about 20 sen-
iors signed the petition at his
store.
"It's hard to get behind an
issue if they don't know what
it's about. The idea is to get a
forum or a debate going and
see if the system works," he
says.
Helen McLean, a Seaforth
senior, says she signed the
petition and that she's worried
about the proposed cuts to the
Ontario Drug Benefit plan.
"I'm a senior and a diabetic
and the drugs you have to
take are innumerable. It I had
to pay for my drugs, I could-
n't. Most seniors are a quite a
few drugs so this is going to
affect a lot of people," she
says.
`We had people
coming in look-
ing for the peti-
tion to sign. I
hope every,
pharmacy in
Huron got
involved,'-
