Veterans invited to opening
of Canadian War Museum
To the Editor,
I am writing so that I can,
through your publication,
make our war veterans aware
that the new Canadian War
Museum will host its grand
opening on the weekend of
May 7 and 8.
Given that this new
facility, located on the south
bank of the Ottawa River,
(on the LeBreton Flats), is
dedicated to the heroic deeds
of Canada's war veterans, I
would encourage all
Canadians to visit the
museum when next in our
nation's capital.
For more than a century,
this country's armed services
have kept us safe at home
and abroad. Through world
wars., regional conflicts,
severe weather patterns and
unthinkable natural disasters,
the brave men and women of
our military have shaped the
history of Canada and have
been a source of constant
pride and admiration for all
of our citizens.
I am proud to say that the
new Canadian War Museum
is a worthy tribute to the
many national heroes that
have donned the uniform
and offered their lives at the
altar of freedom.
It is with this is mind that
the Canadian War Museum
will officially open its doors
on Sunday, May 8. The
opening marks the 60th
anniversary of VE Day at the
end of WWII.
Limited reserved seating
has been set aside for
veterans (plus one guest).
Interested veterans are asked
to confirm their attendance
for the national
commemorative and opening
ceremonies, as well as for a
special Veterans Affairs
lunch, so that sufficient
seating can be arranged. To
register, veterans should call
1-866-652-9484.
If you have any questions,
or if you plan to attend the
opening, I would invite you
to call my Goderich office at
(519) 524-6938 or 1-800-
465-1726.
I would encourage
veterans from across Huron -
Bruce to consider taking part
in this important national
event but, moreover, I would
urge everyone, young and
old alike to visit this
museum; you will be glad
you did.

Huron -Perth school board celebrates
Catholic Education Week, May 1-6
To the Editor,
During the week of May 1
6, the Huron -Perth
Catholic District School
Board will be celebrating
Catholic Education Week
2005.
The theme for the week is
"Being the Body of Christ,"
a theme that is particularly
appropriate in this "Year of
the Eucharist."
The foundational belief of
Catholic education is that
spiritual and moral formation
are critical to the formation
of the whole person and to
the realization of the fullness
of life.
Catholic education always
aims at forming students in
the life -affirming Christian
virtues that give life its true
freedom, meaning and joy.
In this way, Catholic
education makes a
distinctive difference not
only to the lives of our
students, but also to our
communities, our province
and our country.
Catholic Education Week
is marked by special
activities at all grade levels,
including prayer celebrations
and service activities.
I would like to invite you
to visit any of our schools
during this special week and
to participate in any of our
activities as we celebrate
Catholic Education Week
2005.
Sincerely,
Larry Langan
Director of Education
Huron -Perth Catholic
District School Board

LOCAL ADVISORY
COMMITTEE (LAC)
SPRING UPDATE #2
Congratulations to the
Seaforth Community!
We are one of the first
communities in Ontario to receive
approval to establish a Family
Health Team (FHT). This team
will provide improved access to primary health care
services (first contact with a health care provider) in our
community and will be particularly important for those
individuals who do not currently have a family doctor.
Congratulations to Gwen Devereaux and the team of
healthcare providers who submitted a successful proposal
for funding.
The patient satisfaction surveys consistently tell us that this
hospital site is valued by and essential to this community.
We are committed to working with you to ensure a vibrant
site.
HURON PERTH
HEALTHCARE
ALLIANCE
As Andrew Williams, CEO of the Huron Perth Healthcare
Alliance noted during the FHT funding announcement:
partnership, elbow grease, and leadership are critical
elements to success. These ingredients are all evident in
the recent Family Health Team funding announcement,
revitalization of the Scaforth Community Health Centre,
recruitment efforts, and planning for Hospital based
services as our communities work together.
The submission of Balanced Budget Plans has been
difficult for Ontario Hospitals. The Ministry of Health and
Long Term Care is quite clear that hospitals will he
expected to have balanced budgets without significant
funding increases, and health care services that hospitals
provide will he redefined. Our Balanced Budget Plan
submission to the government proposed measures to
balance a $7 million deficit with the qualifier that thc Board
was not in favour of reductions to direct service. The
Alliance Board is committed to ensuring that none of the 4
Hospital sites close and that core services at each site
include a 24-hour Emergency Department and supporting
services.
As a small site, we arc stronger and more stable as a
member of a larger organization. There are the economics
of scale in a shared administration and support staff,
common integrated information technology. negotiated
service contracts and volume purchasing. Staff have
greater access to jobs across the 4 sites and there have been
recent opportunities to create full time positions across
sites.
The Local Advisory Committee is the "recruitment
committee.' for the Scaforth Community hospital,
identifying needs for both the Hospital site and the medical
clinic. We work closely with Gwen Devereaux.
Community Development Officer of the eight Huron Perth
hospitals. The LAC salutes the efforts of the Foundation
who, through the financial support of the community and
Nevada tickets, have contributed much financial support to
the physician recruitment efforts in this community. We
also acknowledge the recent support of the Huron East
Community Development Trust and Huron East Count:il to
the Seaforth Community Hospital Trust for thc Scaforth
Community Health Centre and medical clinic. By working
together we are stronger.
LAC meetings are open to the public: please contact Grace
Dolmagc at 527-3901 for meeting dates and times.
Membership vacancies are advertised annually with
applications welcomed from interested individuals in our
community.
