She added she hopes Seaforth will become a centre of excellence for primary care in Ontario and a training site for future health care professionals. She is hoping to partner with the Stroke Prevention and Atherosclerosis Research Centre (SPARC) in London by participating in clinical trials and with the Southwestern Ontario Medical Education Network (SWOMEN) on educational projects. Huron East Deputy Mayor Bernie MacLellan said the municipality, partnering with the Huron Perth Healthcare Alliance, the Seaforth Community Hospital Trust and the Seaforth Community Development Trust, have been working hard to make health care a priority locally. "I want to say thanks to the province because I think Huron East is well worth it," he said. Seaforth doctors at the press conference said they were still uncertain about the details of how the family health team would work but were hoping it would help look after the 2,000 to 3,000 orphan patients in Huron East. "We're all seeing orphan patients now if they're sick but hopefully this will help us attract new doctors and others to share the load," said SCH chief of staff Dr. Dan Rooyakkers. Dr. Robert Shepherd, who was involved in writing the proposal for the Seaforth FHT said the project is just in the beginning stages. "We've been given permission to make suggestions about how it will be developed. We want to make sure it matches the need locally," he said. "It's new and exciting and a lot of medical students are talking about it," said Dr. Heather Percival. Use common sense with outdoor burning, asks Huron East fire. chief By Susan Hundertmark Expositor Editor While the Huron East fire chief is not declaring an outright ban on outdoor burning, Marty Bedard is asking rural residents to use common sense and wait until a few rainy days have passed. Bedard adds that because there's been little new growth of grass, conditions are ripe for fires that can spread quickly. "There's a lot of dead grass and it scoots along pretty fast on the ground and will quickly get out of control," he says. Municipal bylaws prevent any outdoor fires in urban areas, such as Seaforth, for any purpose other than cooking food. Yard waste burning is not allowed and Bedard said formal complaints about burning will be dealt with by the municipal bylaw officer. Bylaws also require rural dwellers to call the municipality to inform officials about controlled burns. Seaforth firefighters responded to several fire calls last week including a fire at a wooded area behind the Seaforth Agriplex on Friday around 5 p.m., a call to the compost facility in Harpurhey on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. and to a grass fire at a farm on Hydro Line Road on Saturday at 5 p.m.. Seaforth's Acting Fire Chief Tom Phillips says the fire behind the Agriplex involved a brush fire and fires in several tires which caused a cloud of black smoke. Phillips says he doesn't know how the fire started but adds that the site looks like a place where kids congregate. "There were 100 to 200 pop cans back there," he says. Saturday's fire at the compost facility in Harpurhey took two and a half hours to put out. "The whole compost heap was burning and the smoke was blowing into the residential area to the north," says Phillips. Huron East Fire Chief Marty Bedard says the cause of the fire is unknown since the controlled burn at the site last Monday had been put out. "It wasn't started by the municipality. Somebody either put something hot in there or it was spontaneous combustion," he says. During the compost facility fire, the Seaforth fire department was also called to a grass fire on a farm on Hydro Line Road.
