Compost depot neighbour unhappy
with burning at Harpurhey facility
By Susan Hundertmark

A neighbour of the new
compost depot in
Harpurhey is not happy
that brush is being burned
instead of the more
environmentally -friendly
alternative of grinding it.
"Compost, if done right,
could be very valuable. It
could be sold back to
gardeners. But, burning is
not composting and it's
not environmental," said
Jim Kelly, of Harpurhey.
Kelly called the
Expositor Monday when a
controlled burn was
taking place at the
compost facility, which
was moved from the north
end of Seaforth this
winter because it was too
close to the wellhead on
Welsh Street.
He complained that the
fire was spreading ash
and the smell of smoke
throughout the
neighbourhood.
"That thing stinks and
we already have the
(sewage) lagoons. That's
enough smell," he said.
A Huron East public works employee monitors a
compost facility, moved recently to Harpurhey.
Huron East Public
Works Coordinator John
Forrest said he'd chosen a
controlled burn over
grinding the compost
material at the depot
because hiring a grinder
is too expensive.
"Maybe it's not
environmental but hiring
a grinder is more expense

controlled burn on Monday at the new
to the taxpayer. We tried a
chipper and that doesn't
work," he said, adding
that renting a grinder
could cost thousands of
dollars.
"How else are we going
to get rid of it?" he said.
Forrest added that with
the large pile of brush at
the compost facility, a
controlled burn is
preferable to the
possibility of arson.
Forrest said he plans
regular burns at the
facility to keep the
compost and brush
controlled.
"This is the worst it
should be," he said.

As for what she thinks she

Although van den Elzen has never owned a flower shop
before, she said she has the help of two designers — Kathy
