Egmondville postmaster hoping
for support from Huron East
By Susan Hundertmark
Expositor Editor
Egmondville Postmaster Tom Papple is hoping Huron East
council will throw its support behind the Egmondville post
office by asking Canada Post to ensure residents of the new
Bridges development use its services.
"I think it would be helpful. If Canada Post saw a
community in support of its post office, that would help," he
said.
Papple, who also runs the Egmondville store, sent a letter to
council last week asking for help in "preserving and
expanding our little post office and the history of our
community for the next 150 years."
He said the post office and store have been the focal point of
Egmondville for 150 years "at the very heart of this growing
community."
With 228 boxes at the Egmondville post office, Papple said
the 248 -house Bridges development would potentially double

Alliance board
discussing how
to best improve
communications
with municipalities
By Susan Hundertmark

The Huron Perth
Healthcare Alliance board
is discussing how best to
improve communications
with municipalities in its
area, says
CEO Andrew
Williams.
"The issue
was raised by
the Seaforth
focus group
and we're
looking at
different
options about
how to
engage
good discussion with all the
municipalities. But, we
haven't contacted anyone
formally yet.
Communication is always
going to be a big issue," he
says.
A report from the
Alliance's
e xternal
relations
committee
says the

will draft an

municipal governments," he
says.
While the Seaforth focus
group and Huron East
politicians asked that
muncipal representatives be
placed on the Local
Advisory Committees of the
Alliance. Williams says no
decision has yet been made
about that suggestion.
However, he says that as
the Alliance looks to fill
vacancies on its hoard and
its LACs, municipal
politicians could submit
their names.
"That opportunity is there
right now." he says.
W/lliams says the
Alliance is also looking at
meeting with municipal
governments in the area to
discuss mutual concerns.
"We want to ensure there
are regular channels for
which will include an
overview on why the
Alliance was formed, its
benefits, features, and will
address specific local
concerns.
"If this process is
effective, it will be carried
out formally across all
HPHA communities," says
the report.
Other strategies
considered included setting
up informal one-on-one
meetings with the mayor
and council members,
establishing municipal
representation on LACs,
continuing formal
presentations to councils on
a regular basis, as well as
quarterly publication of
open community letters
from LACs, to keep local
communities apprised of the
Alliance's current activities.
the postal service.
But, Papple said Canada Post is considering serving the
Bridges development with postal boxes in the community.
"We used to have boxes in the village up until six or eight
years ago and it got to be an awful mess especially in the
winter with street cleaning. It would be going backwards to do
it again," he says.
Papple says there have also been rumours for several years
about whether or not the Egmondville post office could be
closed.
"I don't know if there's a threat to the post office. I've been
hearing it might close for a couple of years now but I haven't
been told if it will or it won't. Nobody seems to want to
answer. But, it sure wouldn't hurt to keep all the postal service
in Egmondville here," he says.
Tuckersmith Coun. Larry McGrath told council at last
Tuesday's meeting that he'd like to see council set up a
meeting with Canada Post to discuss the situation.
"A lot of people rely on that store," he said. "My fear is that
by allowing boxes in Bridges, you're starting the movement to
putting boxes back in the rest of Egmondville."
Seaforth Coun. Lou Maloney wondered if it wouldn't be
handier for Bridges residents to have post boxes in their
subdivision than at the store.
But, Seaforth Coun. Joe Steffler said council should support
the mail being offered at the store.
"Otherwise, we'd just be giving them the opportunity to
close Egmondville, along with the other smaller post offices,"
he said.
Council passed a motion to declare its support of the
continuation of the Egmondville post office and that the
Bridges subdivision be serviced by the post office in
Egmondville.
Developer Bill McLean said during a phone interview that
he has no personal preference about postal service for the new
development.
"Whatever's best for our buyers - we'd have to ask them
what they prefer," he said.
However, McLean said he talked to Canada Post several
weeks ago and understood that on-site boxes are supposed to
service the subdivision.
"I was told that is their policy and that it's serving the
customers best that way," he said.
