Seaforth Hitmen place
sixth in national tourney
Area broomball players
held their own against
Canada's best last week as
they competed at the 14th
annual Canadian Juvenile
Broomball Championships in
Leduc, Alberta.
The Central West Hitmen -
consisting of players aged 16-
19 from the Blyth, Clinton and
Seaforth area - placed sixth
overall and brought home
consolation silver medals
following the four-day
national tournament.
Coach and former Hitmen
player Nathan Hubbard said
"overall the boys played well,
but fell short of their gold
medal goal."
Flying out in the early
morning hours of March 26,
the Hitmen held one on -ice
practice before facing
Windsor in their first game of
the tourney on Wednesday
morning.
Central West played strong
throughout their opening
game against Windsor, as
goaltender Brian Van Bakel,
of Seaforth, earned a shutout.
Things took a turn for the
worse however the following
day, as the team suffered a 4-1
loss to the Saskatchewan Jr.
Axemen.
"We came out at full power
in the first game against
Windsor, but after that the
chemistry just wasn't there,"
Hubbard commented.
The Hitmen went on to
finish third in round-robin
play, recording a 3-1 win over
the Northwest Territories and
a tough 1-0 loss to Stanislas,
Quebec.
Going into playoffs on
Friday afternoon, the boys
took on the host team, the
Edmonton Jr. All -Stars,
winning 2-1.
"Then we went to the
consolation finals, which
became a re -run of the
provincial finals, except at the
provincials we won," Hubbard
said.
Fighting hard against their
long-time Ontario rivals, the
Eastern Icedogs, the Hitmen
couldn't get past the team's
strong defense and lost the
game 3-1 to take home
consolation silver.

team went on to win national
gold, with Saskatchewan's
Odessa Bandits and Axemen,
finishing second and third
respectively.
"Getting to the nationals is
an impressive
accomplishment in itself,"
Hubbard said.
"We just couldn't get it
together when we needed to
this time, but we'll be back
next year."
Gerard O'Reilly, of
Seaforth, received the team's
most valuable player award at
the tournament's April 1
banquet.
