Huron Expositor, 2005-04-06, Page 9Sports Dozens support fundraiser for Huron County for Children of Chernobyl By Cheryl Heath News -Record Editor Dozens of area residents came out to Central Huron Secondary School Saturday morning to take a stroll for a good cause. Participants were on hand for the eighth annual fund- raising walk for Huron County for Children of Chernobyl respite program. Organizer Shelley Bender says the event's $3,000 goal helps cover the costs associated with 17 children who will be visiting the county from Belarus this June. She notes the children's six-week stay includes numerous trips to tourism hotspots as well as visits with area health-care professionals. Most importantly, it gives their immune systems a chance to take a break from the environmental hazards present in their home community as a result of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster of April 25-26, 1986. Families from Bayfield, Dashwood, Hensall and Exeter, as well as other communities, are set to open their doors to children from Belarus. Elliott and Carla Fisher, of Clinton, represent one area family that is new to the fold this year. Elliott says the family, which includes sons Isaac, 19, and Reuben, 9, chose to welcome children into their home via the program after seeing an advertisement seeking host families. He says the family is looking forward to the experience and they will also enjoy the opportunity of having a daughter for the summer. "Hopefully, we'll have some fun," he says, noting the family expects that their visitor will be about the same age as their youngest son, who is a Clinton Public School student. For more information on the program, area residents can call Jack or Shelley Bender at 565-2243. Donations can be made care of PO Box 512, Goderich, N7A-4C7. Charitable receipts are issued.
