Seaforth hospital gets
$11,500 to create safer
workplace for employees

Last week, Seaforth Community Hospital
received $11,500 from the provincial
government to help create a safer work
environment for health care workers.
Hospital site leader Mary Cardinal said
that the one-time funding will be used for
the purchase of safety engineered products
designed to reduce injuries among health
care workers.
The money will be used to replace
needlesticks and sharps with equipment
like safety syringes, safety catheters and
safety phlebotomy needles.
"These are all things that either eliminate
the need for a needle or automatically recap
a needle," said Cardinal.
Although the Seaforth Community
Hospital has minimal numbers of injuries
with equipment like needlesticks, Cardinal
said that the funding will help reduce
incidents even more.
"This just further minimizes the risk,"
Cardinal said. "Any initiative like this that
reduces potential injuries among workers is
great funding."
The one-time funding is part of a $11.6
million investment by the McGuinty
government to help hospitals move away
from needles by supporting top-of-the-line
needle -less systems.
"This investment will help to protect
workers at our hospitals by making safer
needles and medical equipment available,"
Huron -Bruce MPP Carol Mitchell said.
"This is vital to reducing the number of
injuries and infectious disease transmission
among our front-line workers," said
Mitchell.
In a press release, Minister of Health and
Long -Term Care George Smitherman said
the money will help protect those working
in hospitals.
"Our government recognizes that nurses
and other health care providers do vital
work for Ontarians," said Minister of
Health and Long -Term Care George
Smitherman. "We are supporting and
protecting them in that effort."
The Clinton and Exeter hospitals each
received $6,000 and Goderich's Alexandra
Marine and General Hospital received
$27,700.
