The Seaforth Atoms make their way down the ice during a game against St. Marys at the Bill Carnochan Memorial
tournament over the weekend in Seaforth. St. Marys came first in the tournament and Seaforth tied for second.
Dawgs capture rec league title
Well, there may be no NHL
this year, but for the fans that
crowded the Seaforth Arena
Sunday morning to watch the
finals of the Seaforth
Recreational Hockey League
championships, that hardly
seemed to matter.
Loaded Dawgs faced off
against KKN in the final
game of the best two out of
three series, with the Dawgs
winning game one a week
earlier.
Dawg coach, goalie and
general manager Mark
Cantelon commented that the
Dawgs "played solid two way
hockey" in game one to take
the contest remarking that
although his guys were the
seniors between the two
teams, they "may in fact have
been better conditioned over
the course of the season,
which may have been the
difference" in the opening
game of the series.
In game two, both teams
seemed to take control of the
game at different points, but
it was the Dawgs who struck
first, when Wayne Smith
snapped home a rebound to
start off the scoring.
Scott Rathwell notched his
first of two on the day to
open up the lead.
Midway through the
second period, Bill Prezcator
took a long breakaway pass,
and beat KKN goalie Adam
Agar with a low shot to open
up some breathing room for
Dawgs.
A late goal, capitalizing on
a rebound off a flury in front
of the KKN net gave a
commanding lead to the
Dawgs heading into the third
period.
KKN rallied on occasion
with bursts of speed from the
young squad, but Cantelon
stood his ground in the Dawg
net keeping the youngsters
off the board through two
periods.
The third period saw KKN
finally get to Cantelon as
Jason Smith fired a rocket top
shelf to break the goose egg.
The Dawgs were not done
yet however, and Rathwell
finished off a terrific two -on -
one pass to record his second
of the game.
Jeff Gemmell, former star
defenceman with the Seaforth
Junior'D Centenaires, got in
on the scoring when he
walked in from the point and
combined with Jason Papple
and Dr. Marty Salter to beat
Agar.
KKN's Jason Anstett
notched two late markers, but
it was too little too late as the
Dawgs skated away with the
title in convincing fashion.
Mike Radford was
"impressed by the composure
this veteran team displayed in
holding off a spry
enthusiastic KKN squad."
One long time rec. league
fan was heard to say that
"that could very well be the
most exciting game of
hockey this rec. league has
seen in almost a decade."
All teams will now look to
set their sights on next year's
season when they will once
again have to compete for
fans with the NHL schedule.
League commissioner
Jason Dietz said "the lockout
has been excellent for rec
league business, but we knew
that eventually they would be
going back to work. We will
have to continue to provide a
valuable sports entertainment
product to stay competitive
and maintain our fans."
Plans are already in the
works for contraction in the
league next year, with the
consensus being that the
talent pool has been watered
down somewhat by
aggressive expansion to six
teams from four several years
ago.
