Seili wants municipal rep on Alliance LAC

hospital would, or could,
close," said Rae. "I'd just like
to state in my opinion as an
alliance board member it's
always been a fundamental
task that all the four hospitals
would remain open."
Rae explained that he has
not heard anything from
anyone in the alliance to
suggest otherwise.
Former Huron East Mayor
and member of the study
group, Lin Steffler said that
rumours are fuelling the
community's worry about the
hospital.
"Where the problems seem
to be stemming from is that
the community is hearing that
certain protective care or
primary care issues at other
hospitals within the alliance
(are being cut)," said Steffler.
Alliance CEO Andrew
Williams explained that the
Ontario government has said
that the alliance cannot make
"any cuts to services or
reduce access to service if

there were no offsets in the
community to pick them up."
Alliance board member
Gerald Smith said that one of
the main problems hospitals
around the province are
facing is a shortage of
doctors.
"I think the community
should be doing everything
they can to bring physicians
in," said Smith. "The
physicians bring with them
their expertise and their
requirements for the
hospital."
Williams explained that
Seaforth's doctor situation is
a little more critical than
some other communities
looking for doctors.
"The recruitment pressures
here are more acute than they
are in other communities,"
Williams said.
Rodney agreed and said
that the Seaforth hospital
needs to have a plan in place
before they can recruit hospital.
doctors with specific skills.
"The hospital is just like a
factory. It has to decide what
its products are.going to be
and go out and find the
skilled people," said Rodney.
Williams said that
recruiting doctors is one of
their top priorities.
"That is probably one of
our top three or four issues,"
Williams said. "We know that
without the people we're not
going to sustain any services.
It's an ongoing issue."
Williams said that the
alliance is trying to recruit
doctors to the area at
recruitment fairs across
Canada.
Joe Steffler, a Seaforth
councillor on Huron East
council and the chair of the
Seaforth Community
Development Trust, said he's
worried that if Seaforth were
to continually lose services it
could spell the end for the
"1 can see this destroying
our hospital from within
because every service that is
lost is one more reason for a
patient to go to another
hospital," he said. •
He added that Huron East
council pledged to contribute
$50,000 a year for the next
three years and the Seaforth
Community Development
Trust donated a one-time
$100,000 grant towards the
Seaforth Medical Centre.
"I think we have done our
bit as a community and 1
think we're willing to do
more," Joe said.
The additional funding, Joe
Steffler said, will help
upgrade the clinic and would
help recruit more doctors to
the area which would
enhance "the viability of the
Seaforth Community
Hospital."
"My concern as a
councillor and chairperson of
the trust, is if the present
governance does not give
Seaforth Community
Hospital any larger role to
play in the alliance, the
hospital will eventually close
because we no longer offer
the services," he said.
Williams said the study
group's work could help the
hospital.
"From our experience, the
communities that are
successful are those that are
doing just what this
committee has done,"
Williams said.
Alliance chair Tim
Cronsberry said that the
findings of the study group
would be forwarded to the
Seaforth Local Advisory
Committee.
"The board appreciates the
work that you have done and
we will refer you to the
Seaforth LAC and move
forward with it and it will
help with planning," said
Cronsberry.
Two charged after Huron OPP seize
$483,000 in marijuana at grow operation
A husband, 56 and wife, 55, from Huron East were charged
with possession for the purpose of trafficking, production of a
controlled substance and possession of a controlled substance
after close to $483,000 in marijuana was seized from a house
on Centennial Road on Friday.
The Huron OPP, assisted by the Western Region Drug
Enforcement Section executed a drug search warrant at a
residence between Brucefield and Seaforth.
Officers searched a residence and a driving shed located on
the property behind the home at approximately 12:45 p.m.
A quantity of processed marijuana was found in the
residence along with a small amount of cannabis resin.
Over half of the driving shed had been converted to an
indoor marijuana grow operation and officers seized 449
mature plants in the shed.
In total 449 marijuana plants, two kilos of processed
marijuana and a little cannabis resin valued at $483,255 were
seized along with $50,000 worth of growing equipment. One
of the items used in the grow operation was a large industrial
type diesel generator.
Two people later that day were taken into custody and held
for bail hearing in Goderich Monday.
