Steckle believes Canada making right decision to refrain from BMD plan By Cheryl Heath News -Record Editor U.S. Ambassador Paul Cellucci may have gone ballistic over Canada's plans to refrain from helping to fund the Ballistic Missile Defence (BMD) plan being touted by U.S. President George ,Bush but Huron - Bruce MP Paul Steckle believes the country is making the right decision. "Paul Cellucci is an ambassador to Canada. Obviously, he represents an American viewpoint," he says. Steckle, who has come out strongly opposed to the proposed anti-missile defence plan first introduced by the late U.S. President Ronald Reagan in the 1980s, says constituents in Huron and Bruce counties are also strongly against the idea of the country funnelling untold millions of dollars into the dodgy technology, which has consistently failed to hit its target in test trials. While Steckle thinks the Canadian government's decision to enhance defence and North American Aerospace Defence Command (NORAD) funding should be applauded, he says the country would be wise to steer clear of the BMD plan. "Let's not engage in a system of militarization," he says. He adds Cellucci's argument that Canadians won't have a voice in the development of the system is comical given that the U.S. government moves to the beat of its own drummer on virtually every border issue, including how checkpoint crossings are managed.
