Huron Expositor, 2005-03-02, Page 3News Seaforth hospital trust takes over management of medical centre Trust celebrates recent recruitment of Dr. Helen Frye to Seaforth By Susan Hundertmark Expositor Editor As the Seaforth Community Hospital Trust takes over the management of the Seaforth Medical Centre this month, chair Rap Lavoie is celebrating the recruitment of a new doctor and ongoing renovations to the building. "This is exciting news. This is something we should really blow up the balloons about," said Lavoie about Dr. Helen Frye's first day on the job Monday. Dr. Frye, who worked at Children's Hospital in Ottawa where she also taught medical students, comes to Seaforth after working as a locum in Northern Ontario near Timmins. "I enjoyed the small communities when I was working as a locum and I wanted to settle in one place again," said Frye Monday. "I was looking for a small hospital and clinic because I enjoy that kind of medicine. Seaforth had the right mix." Frye is. living in London and commuting to Seaforth where she plans to have a full-time practice. "I know there's a lot here who don't have a doctor and I hope to be able to ease the orphan situation," she said. Lavoie said that while the medical centre will have three full-time doctors with the recruitment of Dr. Frye, it has room for six full-time Dr. Helen Frye family doctors. "We're still recruiting and we have locums that rent offices here on a short -time basis," he said. "We're looking to have the balance of space filled up and that could mean a combination of full-time doctors and locums." said Lavoie. While the SCH trust has built a circular driveway at the entrance of the clinic and installed new carpeting and tiling throughout the medical centre, Lavoie said renovation plans still include new roofing for the building, a new paint job throughout the building, new window coverings, furniture and examination tables and new signage for the building. Another project still to be completed is a new computer system for the medical centre that will handle the scheduling, billing and charts. Lavoie said that system will be chosen after the outcome of a proposal to the province for Seaforth to Steckle admits budget does not address farm crisis From Page 1 between $8 and $9 billion. As for agriculture, Steckle acknowledges the $130 million announced for transitionary funding is virtually a "pittance" but says the government is well aware of the dire situation within the industry and that more aid will be made available. He notes, for example, the government invested $2 billion to aid the ailing beef industry in the past two years. Steckle says there is a $5 billion contingency fund in place, but notes the government does not want to make any decisions on how to spend the money until more information on what is needed is at hand. The fact that more funding hasn't been announced doesn't mean the government is clueless about the dire straits farmers are facing, says Steckle. "This is serious," says Steckle. "Believe me, 1 know how serious it is." He says the proposed elimination of the cash deposit for the Canadian Agriculture Income Stabilization (CAIS) program is a definite perk and one that has been lobbied for by several agriculture - based organizations. However, for the plan to go ahead, seven provinces must ratify the proposal given that it is a jointly federal -provincial run program. So far. says Steckle, the agreement has not been ratified and the Province of Ontario, among others. has Huron East man charged with driving without licence A 22 -year-old Huron East man was charged with driving a vehicle without a driver's licence on Feb. 23 after Huron OPP stopped a red 1994 Chev Astro van on Goderich Street in Seaforth. j yet to step on board with the plan. "If I had my way. (the deposit) never would've been there," he adds. Steckle adds the budget also reaffirms the government's commitment to health care with $805 million in new money for programs including $75 million, over five years, to assist foreign - trained doctors to quality to work in Canada. The House of Commons is set to vote on the budget March 7-9. News tip? Call 527-0240 provide one of 45 family health teams across Ontario is known. Seaforth recently submitted a proposal to offer a family health team, which would provide primary care through a team of doctors, nurses and other health care professionals. Lavoie said the centre will also be turning one of its office spaces into a small meeting room that can be used by the family health team when meeting with patients. Under the new management of the SCH trust, the same tenants will remain in the building. The tenants include Gamma- Dynacare Medical Laboratories, Irwin Physiotherapy, the Elementary Teachers' of Ontario Union and psychologist Dr. Anne Laviolette.
