Memorial
curling
tournament
held
in Vanastra
By Tim Cumming
Sigpal-Star Editor
Youths aged 12 to 18
honoured the memory of
Olympic -champion Canadian
curler Sandra Schmirler on
Saturday at the Vanastra
Curling Club.
Young curlers from
Seaforth, Vanastra, Wingham,
Exeter and Kitchener took
part in a fundraising bonspiel
to support the Sandra
Schmirler Foundation.
In its fourth year, the event
raised more than $1,500 on
Saturday, said organizer Erin
Jamula.
"This tournament is for any
kids who want to come out
and have fun. Schmirler said
you have to keep things in
perspective so make sure the
emphasis is on fun," said
Jamula.
Jamula, who was in Grade
12 when she began the
tournament, is an avid curling
fan from the Goderich area,
who followed the world
curling successes of
Schmirler. She was deeply
affected when Schmirler died
at the young age of 36 after
dominating women's curling.
"When Sandra Schmirler
died Erin wanted to do
something for that cause,"
recalled her mother, Jan.
The mission of the
foundation is to help families
with children who are facing
life-threatening illnesses and
it supports several charities.
This year's event was held
on the first day of the Scott
Tournament of Hearts, also
known as Sandra Schmirler
Day, being held this year in
St. Johns, Newfoundland.
"We just happened to hold
it on Sandra Schmirler Day
last year and this year. We try
to do that if it works out for
us," said Jamula.
The local event has raised
more than $3,000 in its first
three years.

CREATURE COMFORTS
by Craig Nicholson
(02004 by Craig Nicholson. All rights reserved.)
For three months each winter, I'm away on tour, riding my
snowmobile. While 1 get back home occasionally to do a
laundry and make certain everyone remembers my name, I
spend most nights at one trailside motel or another. From this
experience, I have developed a Top 10 List necessary for my
creature comfort.
1. Plugs: A good night's sleep is essential to my sharpness
and stamina next day. Dreamtime can be destroyed when
bunking with a fellow rider who stays up late watching TV or
snores up a storm at night. So I always carry a supply of foam
earplugs to use whenever I have a roommate.
2. Water: Used to be that 1'd often have a restless sleep or
constantly be thirsty on the trail. Fact is, I was dehydrated
from cold weather, prolonged activity and limited opportuni-
ties for liquid intake. So when the day's ride is complete, I
start consuming lots of water , not pop, alcohol or fruit juice.-
3. Stretches: Muscles worked hard the previous day have a
tendency to stiffen overnight — as does my weary back. So I
do a 10 -minute regime of gentle stretches to loosen every-
thing before riding.
4. Relief: Whoever said that riding isn't exercise has never
snowmobiled eight to 10 hours every day. And guess what?
Every trail isn't always smooth! So I occasionally take a cou-
ple of Tylenols to ease my weary muscles and relax for a
proper night's sleep.
5. Cream: Winter is cold and dry, resulting in chapped, dry,
cracked or itchy skin. So as a preventative measure, I apply a
daily hand cream formulated specially for these conditions.
Waiting until they occur is too late, and can make for an
uncomfortable ride.
6. Hangers: Rare is the hotel room that has enough hangers
or places for two persons to hang their gear to dry. So I carry
a handful of mini -hangers— clothes pins with integrated
hanger hooks — that allow me to hang from light fixtures.
drapery rods and even picture frames, small things like bala-
clava, breathers, socks and underwear.
7. Clippers: Another victim of cold and dry is my nails.
Often. I'II get a cracked or chipped nail, of break one doing
something on my sled. Keeping them short and filed reduces
the problem, but an offending nail always seems to be catch-
ing in a sock or inside my snowmobile glove.
8. Booties: I like to take my snowmobile boots off in
restaurants. But that can mean a damp sock if 1 step in water
tracked in from outside. So I carry a pair of elasticized surgi-
cal booties that slip on over my socks.
9. Cord: I like to save my cell phone battery for emergen-
cies and to avoid hotel phone charges. so when calling from
the trail. I plug into the outlet on my Ski -Doo using my cell
phone cord.
10. Cloth: Plastic visors, glasses and camera lenses need to
be cleaned regularly. But each is easily scratched, so 1 have a
very soft cloth in my pocket, used Only to clean these items.
