Ringette tournament celebrates its 20th year
of bringing girls and women together in sport
By Susan Hundertmark
Expositor Editor
While they didn't start out
with figure skates and sawed-
off hockey sticks like the very
first ringette players in
Seaforth, many of the women
playing in the first ladies'
ringette tournament in
Seaforth last weekend have
been playing together since
they were girls.
The 20th annual Seaforth
ringette tournament this
weekend recognized the
winter sport for girls that
began before girls were
allowed to play hockey.
"This is the first year we're
offering a ladies division in
the tournament and it's
exciting because most of the
players grew up playing
ringette in Seaforth," says
Seaforth minor ringette
executive member Janet
Keys.
"To see them go through
the sports as girls and
continue as women is
phenomenal and very
promising for the sport. It (the
tournament) was the first
opportunity for many of the
girls to see ringette as an
adult sport," says Keys.
Andrea Gingerich, goalie
on the Seaforth women's
team, says she began playing
ringette during the late 1980s
when court battles were being
waged in Ontario about
whether or not girls could
play hockey on boys' teams.
As a nine-year-old who'd
had enough of figure skating
and wanted to play something
competitive, "I was happy
with ringette," she says.
During her years through
elementary and high school
playing ringette, Gingerich
says Seaforth was known for
its ringette teams.
"We did very well for a
town with such a small
population," she says, adding
that Seaforth won
championships in 1987, 1988
and 1990.
Marg Dale, who was
involved in Seaforth ringette
for a dozen years during the
late 1970s and 1980s, was
Gingerich's coach all the way
through her ringette career.
"The biggest thing about
ringette was giving girls the
opportunity to play team
sports because they weren't
used to it. It was wonderful to
give them a chance to learn
they had to rely on each
other," says Dale.
Dale remembers ringette
beginning in Seaforth in the
early 1970s and getting
involved herself in 1979.
She says the girls began
playing among themselves
and moved on to compete in a
yearly tournament in Owen
Sound. A league began in the
1980s and Dale helped begin
the Huron -Perth Ringette
Association in 1980-81.

Erin Seimon, a member of the Seaforth women's open
ringette team, trips to deke past a member of the
Markham women's ringette team on Saturday night.
Seaforth tied the game 4-4.
"At the time, it was a sport
that was growing and I
enjoyed building something,"
she says.
But, in the early days,
ringette had a struggle finding
a place alongside hockey at
the arenas.
"You couldn't get ice time
when ringette first started.
You had to fight like crazy.
They'd give you 4 p.m. on a
weekday when most of the
girls were still on their school
bus coming home from
school. You got the
leftovers," she says.
And, while Dale hasn't
been involved in ringette
during the past 10 years, she
says it's still her favourite
game.
"It's a fast game if it's
played well and the girls are
as good at skating as any
guys," she says.
Robyn Dietz, a member of
the Seaforth women's ringette
team, started to play the game
in 1985 at age 11.
"Girls could play
houseleague hockey then and
some did but they couldn't
play past age 11 when body
contact started. My parents
wanted me to play ringette,"
she says.
Dietz played as long as she
could in minor ringette until
the last year of high school
and left town for college.
When she heard of a
women's ringette league three
years ago, she decided to play
again after 10 years off the
ice.
"Ringette is a really good
game and it lets you meet
tons of people. I'd missed the
camaraderie," she says.
Both Dietz and Gingerich
are excited that women's
ringette is being offered at the
Seaforth tournament this year.
"1 hope it will inspire some
of the younger teams and let

them see a higher calibre of
play than they normally see,"
says Gingerich.
While the Seaforth
women's team started out in
the C level, it recently jumped
to the B level after a season
of winning most of its games.
"C is where we should be
by population but they moved
us up to B and it's a big jump
in skill level. But, we're not
getting blown away for the
most part," says Gingerich.
The Seaforth team - while
it lost at the weekend
tournament - is playing large
urban teams like London,
Guelph, Kitchener and
Cambridge during its regular
season and is positioned in
the middle of the pack this
year, "fighting for a higher
position," she says.
At the weekend
tournament, Seaforth minor
ringette won two golds by the
novice team and the belle
team.
The Seaforth novice team
beat all three teams it played
including Goderich 10-5,
Hanover, 10-2, Mitchell 8-1
and Mitchell in the finals 9-3.
