A well - attended meal was enjoyed by all. Next brunch is March 6, following the 9:30 a.m. service. Everyone is welcome. Feb. 13 was the first Sunday in Lent. Rev. John Gould's sermon was titled "Trying to be like God." Offering collectors were Frank and Grace Dolmage. After a delicious lunch, the well -attended annual meeting convened with Rev. John in charge and Lorrie Goos as secretary. Paul Dodds and Carol Ann Campbell replace Dalton and Larry Wheatley on the board of stewards. New members of session are Wayne Dolmage, Bud Eyre and Carol McClure. Several new ideas were presented to add to the worship services and the general activities of the church. Ruth Campbell, a 42 - year resident of the Winthrop area, is the Huron Expositor's new correspondent for the area. A member of Cavan United Church and a retired employee of the Seaforth Manor Retirement and Nursing Home, Campbell welcomes news from residents of the Winthrop area. She can be reached at 527-0675. Correspondents St. Columban youth head to Dominican Republic later this month as part of a poverty awareness trip Family members, relatives, neighbours and friends celebrated with Vincent Murray on the occasion of his 85th birthday. After gathering at St. James church in Seaforth for mass, they met at the St. Columban parish hall to continue the celebration with cake and ice cream. All of his children were present to help him celebrate the occasion. Dean Murray and Steve Balfour, two of his grandsons, made a presentation on behalf of the family, and shared some stories about their grandfather. A resounding rendition of "Happy Birthday" was sung to Vincent by his great- grandchildren, accompanied on the piano by Jacob Gillanders- Balfour. The "metropolis" of St. Columban is glad to welcome two new families who have recently moved here. Jeff and Ellen Zehr and family have moved into the house beside the church. Kevin and Lorraine Denneny, Jamie, Aaron and Jesse, have moved here from Guelph after purchasing the former Dianna's and "roost" restaurant. Under the direction of Caroline Wilson, several of the young people who will be travelling to the Dominican Republic from Feb. 19-26 for the "poverty awareness" trip gathered at 5t. Columban the local Knights of Columbus Hall for a retreat time of prayer and reflection in preparation for their adventure. Many suitcases of much needed toiletries, first-aid and school supplies have been made ready and filled, thanks to the generosity of many local area people. Melissa Murray, Jayne Van Bakel, Anne Visser and Christina Simons are four young women from the area who will be travelling to the Dominican Republic, along with about 20 other students from St. Michael High School. Rosemary Balfour has returned from a recent visit to North Delta, B.C. where she visited with family members, including Gord Butters, Kim and Stewart Anderson and Kalia, and Cheryl and Paul Sharpe. While there, she enjoyed a scenic visit to Whistler. Students at St. Columban School celebrated Ash Wednesday with mass at St. Patrick's Church in Dublin, then participated in "Buddy Day" with the students at St. Patrick's School. A skiing trip to Chick'opee had to be postponed until March. The Grade 7 class sold donuts to fund raise for the Brain Tumor Association. The Grade 8 class enjoye.1 a. recent tour and orientation day at St. Michael High School in Stratford. Come out and enjoy the friendship of our February meal at the Hensall Drop -In on Feb. 17 at the Hensall Hensall United Church. Lunch will be served at noon. Following lunch we will be shown slides and hearing from Elinor Clarke. At Carmel Presbyterian Church Tracy Whitson- Bahro's message was "Should I or Shouldn't I." Greg Bahro read the Lenten Journey. Dorothy Taylor was the organist for the ministry of song. The offering was received by Harry Smith and Bob Bell. A Bible Study group will meet on Feb. 22 at 10:30 a.m. At Hensall United Church Agnes Bray was the organist with Pat Veal greeting the people. Janice and Garry Alderdice were the ushers. Glenn Hayter lit the Christ Candle and also gave the reading. Pastor Darke's message was "What shapes your daily life." Lillian Beer and Betty Simmons attended the nursery.
