Six local hockey
players hit the
ice in university
leagues this
winter
By Jason Middleton

This year, six local
hockey players are facing
off in university leagues
across Ontario and the
United States.
These players, male and
female, are battling
injuries and for a spot in
the playoffs.
Eighteen -year-old Leah
Craig, formerly of
Seaforth, said that
playing for the
University of New
Hampshire Wildcats
hockey team is great.
"1
couldn't
ask for a
better
place
with a
better
team,"
said
Craig. "The girls are all
really great and the
school's really nice."
Craig said that her team
is playing really well
together.
"We just really have a
good group of girls," said
Craig. "Everyone gets
along and we practise
five or six times a week."
Twenty-two year old
Derek Nesbitt, of
Egmondville, said that
his team, the Ferris State
Bulldogs, are having a
pretty decent season.
Nesbitt said that his
team had a good start,
followed by a slow
period which turned
around in December
when they won their
Christmas tournament.
" W e
look
like
we're
going to
have a
good
stretch
here at
t h e
end," Nesbitt said. "If we
do that. it should look
good for the playoffs."
Nesbitt is currently in
the last year of a
marketing course at the
Michigan university.
So far. this season
Nesbitt is second in
points on his team.
Twenty -two-year-old
Kim Devereaux. of
Seaforth, said that this
year for her team. the
University of Toronto
University Blues, is a
building year.
She said that in her four
years of being on the
University Blues, her
hockey skills have
improved.
"Being on the ice
everyday, I feel like I've
improved." said
Devereaux. who is
studying physical
education and health.
Twenty -two-year-old
Jessica Finlayson. of
Seaforth. said that
although her team, the
University of Windsor
II
Derek Nesbitt
Lancers, started off with
a good season things
have turned sour.
"We started off really
well and we're kind of
stuck and we can't
score," said Jessica, who
is in her fourth and final
year on the Lancers.
Jessica, who plays
forward on the team, is
the team's assistant
captain.
Currently, her team is
fighting for a playoff
spot against the
University of Western
Ontario and her sister
Mary's team the
University of Waterloo
Warriors.
"I wish we were doing
better to end it that way,"
Jessica, who is studying
criminology, said.
Last year the sisters'
teams faced off four
times against each other.
"It was really
competitive and I
probably played my
hardest those games,"
Jessica said.
She said that she
wishes that she could
have played against her
sister
this year,
but Mary
i s
sidelined
with an
injury to
her knee
which
required surgery.
Mary, 19, hurt her knee
when she was playing
soccer in the St.
Columban soccer league
in the summer. She
thought the injury had
healed, but when she
tried out for the
university's hockey team
she reinjured her knee.
"I didn't realize it was
a big enough problem
that I had to have it
checked out," said Mary.
Over the Christmas
break she had surgery to
help fix the problem.
Mary who still travels
with the Warriors on road
trips said that she is
really looking forward to
playing on the team again
next year.
Twenty-one-year-old
A.J. Larivee, of Dublin,
was also sidelined after
he broke his wrist on the
first game hack on the
University of Alabama -
Huntsville Chargers after
the Christmas break.
"I'm out of commission
for hockey right now,"
said Larivee. "I'm just
schooling it."
Larivee said that he had
surgery three weeks ago
for the injury which
happened when he hit a
guy with a cross check.
"It wasn't a big hit or
anything. I just turned
my wrist wrong," he said.
adding that he thought it
was "fluky."
Larivee is in his second
year at the University of
. Alabama -Huntsville
studying business.
