Now, a year later, Watt said he's a little more comfortable with the Russian culture and can even have a conversation in the language. When Watt arrived in Russia to play for Ska St. Petersburg (otherwise known as the Russian Red Army), he was surprised to learn that they have 20 to 21 hours of day light otherwise known as "white night." Watt said it was a huge adjustment for him because of the time change and trying to fall asleep. "The first three days I was completely miserable and I wanted to go home," Watt said. Then Watt went out with his teammates and realized many of them spoke English. Although he's not fluent in Russian, Watt said that people appreciate it when he attempts to speak the language. He said that he's better at understanding Russian than he is at speaking it, but Watt knows enough to get around. He said that in Russia he "doesn't hear English at all, it's basically Russian. When I come home in the summertime, I'm answering questions in Russian because I totally forget where I'm at." In his career, Watt has played on several American hockey leagues and has played 157 games in the NHL on teams like the Edmonton Oilers, Nashville Predators and Carolina Hurricanes. Last year Watt and his agent 'decided that Europe might be a good place to play for the next couple seasons because of lockout rumours and a shoulder injury he was dealing with. Offers from Sweden, Mike Watt Finland and Germany were on the table for the former NHL player. But, Watt decided on Russia after some careful deliberation with his wife, Nikkole. Watt agreed to play in Russia and decided that he would give it a month to see if he liked playing there. "We just decided and said `Let's see what happens'," Watt said. With the NHL lockout underway, Watt said that there is at least one player from the. NHL on each of the teams in his league the the Russian Super McLlw ain WE KNOW WHAT LEGENDS ARE MADE OF. qt,it AND RIGHT NOW YOUR FORD DEALER CAN HELP YOU PICK ONE. 2005 I-OHU MUSTANG GT G l_1j 1 / "2005 Best New sports/Performance, car" me mustang starting from: $23,795 Mustang GT $30,795 model shown. "The way games and the breaks are spaced, it's kind of hard to get into a groove or a rhythm because you have to sit out games," he said. The import rule was formed by the league so that Russian players could make up a majority of the league. Seaforth native Dave McLlwain who plays with the Cologne Sharks in the German Hockey League said that the lockout is taking away spots on the teams from guys who need to play hockey to make a living. "I don't really agree with all these guys coming over here," Quoted 'When I come home in the summertime, I'm answering questions in Russian because I totally forget where I'm at,' - Mike Watt League. Under Russian league rules, each team can only have four foreign players and can only have three "imports" in their line-up at a time. On his team, Watt said, New York Islanders' player Michael Nylander is currently filling one of their four import spots. "With the four imports, it's not a very good experience because you have to rotate," said McLlwain. "If they're that much behind their union I think they should be over there behind the union. Not taking from guys who wanted to play over here," McLlwain said. "It's taking away from guys who need this money to make a living," he said. On his team, McLlwain said, there are no players from the NHL.
