Legion euchre team heads
to district tournament
Paul Doig, who entered
the Remembrance poems
and essay contest at his
school, won the zone junior
essay and he was presented
with a certificate and
cheque by youth chairman
Charles Perkins. His essay
will go on to the district
level.
The Seaforth Legion's
January meeting was held
Jan. 20.
The Provincial Service
Officer will visit the branch
Feb. 4 at noon. For an
appointment, call Gord at
522-0474.
Congratulations to Don,
Tom, Dave and Ian, on
winning the zone euchre.
Seaforth Legion
They will go on to District
in March.
On Feb. 19 at 7 p.m. there
will be a Texas Hold -Em at
the branch. There is a sign-
up sheet on the notice
board.
Four applications for
membership were accepted
by the attending members.
There are still some
members who have not paid
this year's dues. To remain
in good standing they must
be paid by the end of this
month.
The Friday night suppers
are still being prepared
by members. If you
would like to get
involved, contact Ann
Wood or come on out and
enjoy. The ladies are
planning a Sunday dinner
for March 13.
The Hunting Bear Lodge
is making their plans for
Feb. 12. This event has
always been a good
evening.
Hello from all to our shut-
ins at home or in the Manor
and Maplewood.
At the going down of the
sun and in the morning we
will remember them.

Chinchilla Club members pick out their pets
On Jan 22, the 4-H
Chinchilla Club held
their second meeting.
President, Tanner
Merner started the
meeting off with our 4-H
pledge, then secretary Ian
Murray read the minutes
of the last meeting.
Leader Barb Storey
handed out our 2005 4-H
membership cards.
Leader Ray Storey
4-H Chinchilla Club
showed us how to pick
out a good quality
Chinchilla. Then we
talked about how to take
care of our 4-H animals.
This week we went out
to the Storey's Chinchilla
barn and we each picked
out two Chinchillas to
take home. We drew a
number to see what
order we got to pick
out our chinchilla.
Over the next few
months we will be caring
for our two chinchillas in
preparation for the
judging competition.
Our next meeting will
be held on Feb. 5

THE HURON EXPOSITOR, Feb. 2. 2005-11
Winter sports keep
St. Columban students active
Melissa Murray, Jayne
Van Bakel, Anne Visser
and Christina Simons are
four young women from
the area who will be
travelling to the
Dominican Republic.
They will be joining a
group of about 20 other
students from St. Michael
High School who will be
participating in a
"poverty awareness" trip
to Consuelo, Dominican
Republic, from Feb. 19-
26/05.
While there, they will
be living with a local
family, sharing the living
conditions and life
experiences of the people
there.
Each of the young
women will be travelling
with an extra suitcase
filled with much needed
supplies for the local
people. Among those
items are toiletries such
as toothbrushes and
toothpaste, bar soap,
deodorant; some first aid
supplies such as band-
aids, gauze, tape,
ointment, school supplies
such as pencils, markers
and pens; and new or
gently used clothing and
toys.
Anyone wishing more
information, or to donate
financially, or with
needed items, can contact
one of the young women.
Tom Melady reports
that the "Old Tyme
Music Days" held at the
community centre on
Tuesday afternoons are a
toe -tapping response to
the cold days of winter.
Over 175 people attended
the most recent
gathering, with over 20
fiddles among the
instruments warming up
the atmosphere.
All levels of quality
are well represented, like
a great big "jam session,"
so that no one needs to
feel shy about their
talent. Participation in
winter sports has kept the
students at St. Columban
School active as three
groups of Grade 7 and 8
students participate in
games of hockey in
Mitchell arena and
curling at the Seaforth
Curling Club.
Each class will enjoy
some skiing as the Grade
4 and 5 classes will
travel to Cobble Hills
and the Grade 7 and 8
classes will travel to
Chickopee.
The students are busy
preparing their speeches
which will be said in
each classroom. The best
speeches from each class
will be heard at a later
date in the gym.
"Wacky Hair Day"
brought out the best
creativity from the
students, some arriving
with the worst of bad
hair day and some with
spiked and coloured hair.
The Grade 4 and 5
classroom facilitated a
bake sale which was
enjoyed by the entire
school.
Deacon Ted
MacDonnell of Toronto,
visited in St. Columban,
Seaforth and Clinton and
spoke to the parishioners
at mass about third world
conditions for many,
especially the children.
He spoke of the work
being done through
Christian Child Care
International, a Catholic
mission organization that
works in developing
countries aiming to
mobilize support for the
poor by promoting
projects in the area.
