Ron Williamson, director of the Seaforth Pineridge Snowmobile Club, said that although area trails might be a little rough, they are still open. "It's (the trails are) still not that good at all," said Williamson. "The trails are open but the ploughed fields are pretty rough." Hoping that snow lasts until the middle of March, Williamson said it would be nice to get at least another six inches of the white stuff. "As far as the weather goes, the nights have been very cold," he said. "We aren't losing any snow, but we aren't gaining any either." For much of January, many of the trails operated by the Seaforth Pineridge INDIAN RIVER DIRECT *Citrus Truckload SaZe* - AFOR Wednesday, February 9th 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. eaforth Agricultural Socie (Fairgrounds) 20 lb. It wasn't until a few weeks ago when snow finally returned to the area. "Anybody that has a sled is disappointed with the win- ter," said Williamson. The Seaforth Pineridge Snowmobile Club operates between 200 to 300 km of trails in the Seaforth area and has close to 1,000 members. Williamson said that so far this winter many have been closed. "Actually they have been closed more than they have been open," said Williamson. He admits that snowmobil- ers riding on the trails with- out a permit is a continual problem. "I think it's an issue all the time really," he said. Williamson said that snow- mobiling clubs work very hard to get the trails ready. He said it's unfair for an indi- vidual to ride on a trail that club members have voluntar- ily worked so hard to groom and stake. "The guy that rides them (the trails) without a permit, he's not helping the clubs at all," said Williamson. Trail permits for the Seaforth Pineridge Snowmobile Club's trails can be purchased at any snowmo- bile dealer or from any of the club's executive or directors. Although it costs $230 for a seasonal trail permit, Williamson said that fines for riding without is generally, $242. Over the past weekend in Huron County, OPP officers laid 17 charges against snow- mobilers. A police snowmobile patrol logged 673 kilometres using seven officers over the weekend and laid nine charges on Saturday and eight charges on Sunday. Tickets issued were for snowmobilers using the trails without a trail permit, failing to provide proof of owner- ship and failure to display a permit (validation on the windshield). Three people were asked to provide breath samples for acotest but all three passed the test, even though they registered some alcohol in their systems. Avg, /iila'iiiI/IF8F CRA/G N/CHOLSON DOUBLE YOUR PLEASURE by Craig Nicholson (©2004 by Craig Nicholson. All rights reserved.) As regular readers know, I'm not a tech head and don't do performance reviews. So it's not often that I write about a spe- cific snowmobile. But BRP's Elite is so unique that many snowmobilers wonder what it's like to ride. I shared that curiosity, so 1 toured with an Elite for three days last winter. For those unfamiliar with it, the Elite is the industry's only two -person snowmobile designed for the operator and passen- ger to sit side by side. Picture a very small convertible car sit- ting on twin tracks, with two skis up front and powered by a rear mounted, peppy 1,500 cc 4 -stroke engine. While its ski stance is no wider than a traditional touring sled, the Elite's scarceness and special configuration elicit many wide -eyes among oncoming riders! The Elite is steered by an airplane -like "steering wheel" with fingertip throttle and brake levers. It is entered through doors on either side and has reverse, two padded seats, a windshield, a front storage compartment and a roll bar. It even has seat belts. The Elite also has a $25,000 price tag... so my questions were: is the Elite practical for trail riding and is it a viable alternative to a traditional, passenger -behind, 2 -up machine? We took the Elite on a 1.000 kilometre overnight tour in company with several traditional snowmobiles. Overall, the Elite was great fun to ride and I was surprised at how well it performed on the trails. Although adjusting to its different steering and handling took a while, each rider in our group had no trouble staying on the trail or keeping up with the reg- ular sleds. The twin tracks and double suspension delivered a very smooth ride. really eating up the humps. Hard as I tried. I was never able to make the Elite bottom out. As to cornering. the Elite was a whiz. Quickly alternating taps on throttle and brake levers provided complete control while turning and kept the Elite tight to the right side of the trail. During our Elite orientation. the dealer said: "With its twin tracks, the Elite is almost impossible to get stuck." Take it from me - while it may be more difficult to get stuck. have a stout towrope and a shovel handy until obtaining the accesso- ry winch. For a full day's ride. the Elite was just comfortable enough for my 6'1" frame, but was better for shorter. slimmer riders. At my size. my helmet hit the roll bar occasionally and find- ing the seatbelt clip and reverse (located between the seats) was tight. The semi -enclosed cockpit provided good wind protection and warmth. However. unusual for me, my feet got very cold. This condition resulted from my hoots resting flat against the inside of the front bulkhead. which itself was ice cold from direct exposure to the oncoming elements. Ideally, the Elite should come with a heated footpad. but until then, placing a thick mat between foot and floor might help. This tour proved to me that the Elite is both a practical trail sled and a worthy two -person conveyance. It's also a great % conversation piece and attention -grabber.
