numbers dropping
While the number of
deer collisions in 2004 in
Huron County have
dropped by 36 since 2003,
Huron East had the third
highest number of deer
collisions in the county.
Deer collisions in 2003
were 348 compared to this
year's final figure of 312,
says the Huron OPP.
The largest number of
deer collisions continue to
occur in October,
November and December
with the worst month being
November with
approximately 75
collisions.
Ashfield-Colborne-
Wawanosh was the leader
in Huron County with 73
deer collisions followed by
Central Huron with 71.
Bluewater was fourth
with 35, Howick was fifth
with 27, Morris-Turnberry
was sixth with 29, South
Huron was seventh with
16, North Huron was
eighth with 14 and
Goderich was last with
two.
The worst road for deer
collisions in the county
was Bluewater Highway
(Highway 21) where 57
collisions took place.
The most collisions
occurred just in the
twilight hours at sunset and
sunrise near bush lots were
close to the roadway or
low areas where rivers,
streams and creeks cross
the road.
A large number of the
collisions involved Huron
County drivers familiar
with the road who said
they were distracted by
others in the car, or the
radio or said they were
sleepy and not paying
attention.
Huron OPP recommend
drivers wanting to avoid
deer collisions concentrate
on the roadway ahead and
scan the edges of the
roadway looking for the
red eyes of wildlife.

Two high school students offer
Seaforth science club for girls
By Susan Hundertmark
Expositor Editor
Two St. Anne's Secondary School students who live in
Seaforth are starting a science club for girls aged eight
to 12.
"Science can be very intimidating and we want girls to
know that science is out there for them," says Tanya
Costello, Grade 11.
"There's a stereotype that science is a boy -type career
like engineering or math. You still see that and we want
girls to know it's not true," says Ellen Whelan, Grade 12.
The two friends met at a science camp run by the
University of Western Ontario several years ago before
Whelan moved to Seaforth and lived in Windsor.
Costello was introduced to the camp through St. James
School in Seaforth while Whelan's mom got her
involved.
"I was home schooled for a while and my mom got me
all these science books and home experiments," Ellen
says.
They both are members of the Canadian Association
for Girls in Science (CAGIS), an online science club for
girls which shares ideas for experiments that can be done
at home and inspiring stories of women with careers in
science.
And, both are planning careers in science - Whelan has
applied to Guelph and Western Universities for
biological engineering and Costello is preparing for a
career in the medical field.
The club is not a school project. Because the two love
science themselves, they want to pass that love onto
other girls in the area.
"For me, it's just for fun because I enjoy science," says
Costello.
Whelan and Costello have formed a chapter of CAGIS
in Seaforth, since the nearest chapter is located in
London.
CAGIS has 10 chapters across Canada and offers
online science activities and a magazine called "Yes."
The club will involve monthly Meetings at the Seaforth
arena where participants will do experiments, talk about
different types of science, invite guest speakers and go
on field trips.
They're already preparing their first meeting to focus
on Newton's law that every action has an equal and
opposite reaction. At that meeting, they'll be making
"goop" out of water and corn starch.
"We want the girls to experiment and feel independent.
Ellen Whelan and Tanya Costello, both of Seaforth,
demonstrate a chemistry.experiment to make "goop."
We don't want to give them all the answers. They'll have
to figure out the proportions of the water and corn
starch," says Costello.
Experiments will be performed in biology, physics,
engineering and math.
The young women are researching school curriculum
and aiming experiments at the lessons girls from age 8 to
12 will encounter in school.
"Hopefully, we'll be able to prepare them with some
background knowledge," says Whelan.
An information night will be held Jan. 26 from 4:15 to
7:15 p.m. at the arena.
