huge financial difficulties.
"Gamblers usually wait
until they're desperate before
they call me. And, that first
call is really hard to make"
"Their debts pile up and
they go to extremes to hide it
because they really believe
they're going to win again,"
she says.
A large and early win is
often a precursor to
addiction, says Huber.
"If you've never been to
the slots before and bang,
you win big, that's one of the
most high risk situations you
can be in. You'll go home
and think about how that
money helped you pay some
bills and start to believe that
if you won once, you can win

again. The next thing you
know, you've lost control,"
she says.
Out of every busload of
people wha take a trip to a
large casino, Huber says a
small number will become
addicted.
Canadian statistics say that
75 per cent of the adult
population gambles and out
of that number, five per cent
will become addicted.
Ways to prevent gambling
addiction include regarding
the activity as only for fun,
taking only the money you
can afford to lose, leaving
home debit and credit cards,
going with a friend who
doesn't like to gamble,
leaving the casino after
reaching your cut-off point
and staying home if your
bills are unpaid.
"You're more likely to get
addicted if you're under
stress and are looking for a
way to deal with financial
problems," she says.
Along with addiction to
gambling at the slots, Huron
County residents are also
addicted to bingo, Nevada
tickets and increasingly,
online gambling.
"We're seeing an influx of
online gambling over the past
year and we're very
concerned about that. People
can gamble online 24 hours a
day, seven days a week and
they tend to stay up all night
gambling and go to work the
next day without any sleep,"
she says.
Huber says at -risk
populations for problem
gambling are seniors, who
have a lot of free time and
more disposable income than
ever before, and young
people.
"Gambling is every bit as
high risk an activity for
young people as alcohol or
drugs but it's bard getting
that message out there. So
far, Huron County youth are
not coming forward but it's
going to show up," she says.
Huron Addiction Services
offers private counselling and
support groups for people
with gambling addictions.
While the support group is
held at the Clinton office at
the Huron County Health
Unit, Huber travels to
Seaforth, Wingham,
Goderich and Exeter to offer
one-on-one counselling to
gambling addicts.
"A lot of people don't
know there's help here and
it's a big step to reach out for
help. Gambling clients think
it's just them with the
problem and there's a lot of
support in knowing you're
not alone," she says.
All sites in Huron have
advantages, says Laviolette
From Page 1
"All sites in Huron County
have advantages. The whole
effort is to bring the plant to
the county. Seafrorth will
likely benefit no matter
where in the county an
ethanol plant is located," says
Huron East economic
development officer Ralph
Laviolette.
Laviolette says Goderich
has a ready supply of steam,
Seaforth is in the middle of
corn country and Hensall
already has a large plant near
the proposed ethanol plant.
"It depends on what they're
looking for and we don't
know exactly what they
want," he says.
The submission includes
26 letters of support for the
Huron County ethanol sites
from politicians,
municipalities, local industry,
local agricultural groups and
conservation authorities.

County's stable

good

large amounts
of locally -

large beef and

the by-product

local strengths.
"Huron
County as the
largest
agricultural and agri-business
based sector in the province
of Ontario would make an
exceptional location for an
ethanol manufacturing site
and can easily meet the 'site
checklist' requirements for a
fully -functioning and
productive ethanol plant,"
says the letter from Steckle.
Huron County Beef
Producers' Association
president Glen Walker's letter
says over 150,000 cattle are
located within Huron County
and that local producers are
"very supportive" of the
opportunity.
Huron County Corn
Producers' president Bob

letter says
Huron
produced
11.7 million
bushels of
corn in the
2003-04
season and
adds there is
"very strong
agreement"
of the
benefits of an
ethanol plant
to the county.
An ethanol
plant could
bring 70 to 100 jobs to the
area and could see one
million bushels of corn being
imported to the plant each
month.
Laviolette says if Huron
County is chosen for an
ethanol plant, the "economic
multiplier will be fairly high"
and all of Huron will benefit.
"With a plant that size,
there will be spin-off
businesses in agriculture,
industry and agri-business,"
he says.

Teateros close their
Classic Touch business
By Jason Middleton
Expositor Staff
Last Saturday, Donna and Len Teatero shut the doors of
their business Classic Touch Liquidation.
Donna said they decided . to close the store so they could
concentrate on their other businesses, which include Teatero
Motor Products, a car leasing company and Seaforth
Precision Collision, an auto body shop, which they took over
last May.
"Something had to give and it (Classic Touch) wasn't
related to the dealership," Donna said.
Classic Touch, which the Teateros opened in November of
2003, offered shoppers furniture, small appliances and
bedding.
Donna said that they had a couple of people interested in
taking the business over but the offers fell through.
Donna said that she's going to miss running the business
because she really enjoyed it.
"I wish we could have kept running the business," Donna
said. "It offered a good service to the town."
