Seaforth Hitmen working hard
fundraising, training for nationals
By Susan Hundertmark
Expositor Editor
As they prepare to compete in the Juvenile National
Broomball Championships in Leduc, Alberta at the end of
March, the Seaforth Hitmen are facing a
$30,000-$40,000 financial challenge.
"Being able to raise enough money to go is
always a worry," says one of the Hitmen's three
coaches, Nathan Hubbard. "It's just as much
work to raise the money as it is to condition
ourselves to compete."
The team of local 16 to 19 -year-olds, many
of them from the Seaforth 'area, are both
competing and fundraising at this weekend's
adult broomball tournament at the Seaforth
arena.
Weekend practices at the Brussels arena are
concentrating on basic skills and "a few secret
plays in the playbook," says Hubbard. .
They're also preparing for the nationals by
playing in two more upcoming tournaments in
Clinton and Barrie against adult broomball
players.
"They play in the Seaforth men's league because there are
not enough other juvenile teams in the area to play a full
season against. And, they learn more about broomball by
playing adults. It teaches them a higher calibre of play," he
says.
Hubbard, who was a member of the Seaforth Hitmen in
2000, when the Hitmen won consolation silver in the nationals
and in 2001, when the team brought home the gold medal,
says going to the nationals is a peak experience for broomball
players.
"I went twice and it's one of the greatest experiences you
can achieve in broomball. It's beyond exciting," he says.
While none of the current players have been to the nationals
as a member of the Hitmen, several - including Gerrard
O'Reilly, of RR 5 Seaforth - have competed at the national
level with the Keady Phantoms, a team from the Owen Sound
area.

Coach
Nathan Hubbard
O'Reilly helped the Phantoms win a silver
medal at last year's nationals in Regina,
Saskatchewan.
Hubbard says that the Hitmen had a good
chance to qualify for the nationals last year but
succeeded this year because they're working
very well as a team.
"A lot of these guys have played together for
years and the whole thing has come together
this year."
"I'm hoping for gold. I feel confident that we
can pull it off - I'm very positive about that,"
he says.
The Hitmen are raising money to meet their
travel expenses of $1,500 per player by selling
food at this weekend's Seaforth tournament,
holding a cash raffle, organizing a lottery or
silent auction and looking for sponsorships
from local businesses.
"We'll have to pay out of our own pockets if we don't raise
the money but either way, we're going," says Hubbard.
While the Hitmen include players from all over Central
Western Ontario, local players include Gerrard and Owen
O'Reilly and Brian Van Bakel, of Seaforth, Jamie Cronin,
Darryl Nyland and Kevin and Shawn Ryan, of Dublin, Scott
Dow and Ian Kerslake, of Staffa and Adam McClure and
Steven McNichol, of Walton.
Other players come from Blyth, Clinton, Londesboro and
Owen Sound.
The juvenile nationals are March 29 to April 2 in Leduc,
Alberta.

Local parishes are turning to the need in Asia and
Africa.
The Diocese of London will work with the Canadian
Catholic Organization for Development and Peace and
Save the Family Plan'Office in order to reach those most
in need. St. Patrick's or St. Vincent de Paul Parishioners
can indicate on their envelopes that the funds are
intended for the Tidal Wave Disaster.
THOUGHT FOR TODAY
Looking before us - we see the road ahead!
Looking behind us - we see shadows of the past!
But, looking around us - we see beauty, friendship, love
and laughter.
Enjoy the present - and the wonderful world around us!

Stratford concert successful
A concert held recently in
Stratford in support of a
documentary on the
sentencing of violent
offenders attracted about 200
people, each paying a $10
entry fee and a silent auction
brought in about $1,000.
Organizer and film maker
Justin Rebelo said he was
happy with the turnout.
His documentary is based
on his brother's experience
as a stabbing victim and
examines the issue of
conditional sentences
imposed for serious crimes.
His next step will be a trip
to Banff to talk to people
who were involved in the
case and looking for support
from broadcasters in the
Toronto area to take his
project across Canada.
