Woman overwhelmed by the
'generosity of the community'
To the Editor,
On Dec. 19, my life and my family life changed. Our
house burnt down and we lost everything, but our
friends.
We have been overwhelmed by the generosity of the
community. We have had people that didn't even know
anyone in the family who opened their hearts to us. I
don't know where to start to thank all the people that
have helped us. There are so many.
1 have always raised my children to respect other
people, that it will come back to you in the long run and
it has twofold. I have always been an independent person
but the generosity of people has made me realize that I
don't have to do things alone. There are a lot of caring
people still out there.
My family is hanging in there, still waiting to find a
place to call home. As the old saying goes, treat people
the way you want to be treated.

Rural voices need to be heard in local
healthcare network, warns Shewfelt
By Tim Cumming
Signal -Star Editor
Rural communities could
lose their voice in health
care planning if they're not
careful, warned Deb
Shewfelt, Goderich, at the
Jan. 6 meeting of Huron
County Council.
The Goderich mayor, who
sits as a county councillor,
said advertisements have
been published asking for
directors for new health
planning bodies proposed by
the Liberal government of
Ontario.
The creation of a Local
Healthcare Integration
Network (LHIN) could,
result in the elimination of
the Grey -Bruce -Huron -Perth
District Health Council
(DHC). The more local DHC
could be replaced by a new
organization making health
care funding decisions for an
area stretching from Windsor
to Tobermory.
"It shocked me and
surprised me to see an ad in
the paper soliciting for
people to sit on the boards,"
Shewfelt said.
"The county needs to act
right away to ensure rural
representation on the health
care planning body," he said.
"It seems so quick,"
Shewfelt said of the process.
The Goderich mayor
argued that there should be
quick action to put Huron
County names forward as
directors and chairpersons.
"Otherwise they could be
filled with political
appointments," he said. "If
they catch us asleep at the
switch we might not have
anybody on there ... it's
dangerous not to have some
people there."
All hospital expenditures
will have to go through the
LHIN, Shewfelt said.
County council passed a
motion to put forward the
names of its two DHC
members — Rob Morley
(South Huron) and Bill
Dowson (Bluewater) — to sit
on the new body.
Huron Health Unit director
Penny Nelligan compared
the introduction of the
LHINs to "a train coming
down the track very
quickly."
County prepares
to tackle budget
Huron County councillors
are expected to sharpen their
pencils as they begin the
process of cutting
expenditures to trim down a
budgeted spending increase
which sits at more than 25
per cent.
A committee of the whole
meeting is planned for
Tuesday, Jan. 18 to look at
the budget and reduce that
number.
"It's going to be a long
day next Tuesday,".predicted
Bernie MacLellan, Huron
East.
What is county's
responsibility in well
cases?
Deb Shewfelt
(Goderich) asked at the
Jan. 6 meeting _of Huron
County Cduncil about the
county's responsibility in
matters of bacteria found
in well systems when
problems recur in
communal wells.
"Where do we stand?",
Shewfelt asked, pointing out
that incidences of well
bacteria and boil -water
advisories show up on
county reports each month.
He said "1 feel
uncomfortable knowing
about" the incidences if the
county is not acting or
cannot act on them.
Health Unit Director
Penny Nelligan said boil -
water advisories were issued
in the cases.
The health unit is
expecting $100,000 in yearly
funding for policy and
enforcement, she said, and
$33,000 in start-up costs.
County Support
for good food box
program questioned
The Good Food Box field -
to -table food program, which
has created a new market for
farmers and provided
nutritious food to people of
modest means, is
temporarily on hold after the
resignation of the program's
coordinator.
Huron County Council
also debated whether the
county should contribute
towards the cost of the salary
of a program coordinator.
Some councillors
wondered if they were
spending money to subsidize
grocery prices for a minority
of Huron County residents —
some who may not need the
low -price food service.
Coun. Bernie MacLellan,
Huron East, said "some of
the people using it are
buying it because it's less
than market (price)."
"I don't want to be
subsidizing food for some of
the people in the county,
especially if they don't need
it," he said. "There are
people who do not need to
be subsidized."
Health Unit director Penny
Nelligan said the program is
"about creating good
nutritional habits" and that
the prices becomes lower per
unit the more boxes that are
sold. There is a profit on
each of the boxes sold but
the main cost of the program
is is the coordinator's
position, she said.
Council was also told that
the program- has benefitted
local farmers by creating a
market for local produce.
Director of Planning and
Development Scott Tousaw
said it is a political decision
whether to support the
program or not but he noted
that agriculture was the
"third pillar" of the Huron
economy and the county puts
"significantly more" funding
into the other economic
pillars of tourism and
manufacturing.
The county will review the
program funding request and
will have more details about
the program including who
uses it.
