I'm going to need snow tires if
I'm to survive 'God's country'
From Page 4
Although my culture shock is not as bad as hers was, I'm
still adjusting.
Coming from the Brantford -area, I'm used to some snow,
but not a whole lot.
In Brantford, residents can expect one or two snowstorms
that drops 20 to 30 centimetres of the white stuff on the
ground.
So far, I've been blown away by the snow that's fallen up
here in the past month.
And, I've been told that the worst is yet to come.
I've had several reactions from people when I ask what the
winters are like up here.
The most common answer is that they are not that bad. This
is usually from the people that have lived in Huron County for
their entire life.
The transplants usually have another answer. They often
warn about the freak snowstorms that blow across Lake Huron
and drop 20 cm of snow in one night.
They are also the people that give me some winter driving
tips and warn me to take my cell phone with me whenever I'm
on the road.
After slipping, skidding and sliding along area roads for the
past month 1 think I finally have my winter driving skills back.
A few weeks ago, someone told described this area as God's
Country because of all the snow that Huron County gets
during the winter.
If this is God's country, can he point me somewhere that has
cheap snow tires?

the store he has seen the
price of cigarettes jump from
$3.75 to $9.
The only difference he has
seen with the government
sanctioned price jumps is
smokers using cheaper
brands.
Roger Lee, manager of GT
Mini Mart, said he's not sure
what he's going to do with
his display at the store if the
legislation is passed.
"I don't have an idea right
now," he said, adding he
might have to put up a gate
over the cigarettes with a
curtain.
By potentially having to
cover the cigarette display
up, Lee said, will make it
difficult for the customers
and bad for business.
"Sometimes a customer
can't remember the label.
They'll remember a colour or
a picture," he said. "If it's
(the display) closed, the
customer can't see it or
remember it."
The act would also make
the owner of a business that
sells tobacco liable for the
action of employees when an
employee sells tobacco to
someone under the age of 19.
"I don't think it's going to
solve anything," said Martin.
"It's just another way for the
government to waste more of
our money."

"This dinner is mostly for
people who are in need of

Several volunteers brought
family members and were
hoping to make their
contribution a family tradition
but Campbell invited them to
sit down to the meal since the
numbers did not merit a large
number of volunteers.
"In another year when
there's a larger turnout, we
might be able to use more
volunteers," she said.
After the dinner, those in
attendance were invited to
stay for cards and crokinole.
"This is about community.
It is definitely a community
effort," said Can#pbell.

improve health, there are also
many so called, 'accidental
additives' that can be
dangerous to the body.
Pesticides sprayed on crops
can be found in small
amounts in some of the foods
we eat.
There has also been
mercury and Lead in foods,
and when consumed in large
amounts, can be very
dangerous. For• some even
small doses can cause
problems.
If you have never been
allergic to anything, but
suddenly become covered in
hives or a rash, this could be
because of accidental
additives. A Readers Digest
book, Foods That Heal,
Foods That Harm provides an
excellent.example of this.
A person who has never
had a food allergy suddenly
gets hives after drinking
milk. The symptoms were
discovered to be a result of
penicillin. Penicillin is often
given to cows in order to cure
Mastitis and trace amounts
made it into milk. For most it
would make no difference,
however for those few that
are allergic, it would have an
effect.
It is easy to assume that
everything you eat is pure,
however in this day in age
you can never be sure. It is
true that most do not make a
difference in your health,
however when there are so
many things added to food it
is hard to know.
Perhaps the next time you
shop in a grocery store. you
will take an extra look at the
food you purchase.

Murray is RC board's chair
Bernard Murray, a long -serving trustee who
is currently vice-president of the Ontario
Catholic Trustees' Association, will serve as
2004-05 chair of the Huron -Perth Catholic
District School Board.
Murray was acclaimed at the board's
annual inaugural meeting on Monday, Dec. 6,
after 2003-04 chair Ron Marcy of Stratford
declined to let his nomination stand for a
second consecutive term.
Murray has served as board chair several
times in the past, most recently in 2002-03.
Speaking at the conclusion of Monday's
meeting, he said his work with the provincial
trustees' association has given him reason to
be proud to come from the Huron -Perth
board.
"Huron -Perth is recognized throughout
Ontario," the Perth South representative said.
"It really is amazing. It's a small hoard but
it's seen as a leader."
Reasons for that reputation were on display
in the audience at Monday's meeting.
Gerry Townsend, the Ministry of
Education's London district manager who
accepted an invitation to attend, was asked to
address the gathering near the end of the
meeting.
He praised the board's administration and
teaching staff for acting as lead regional
board in the delivery of updated curriculum in
primary reading and math. And he thanked
the board and its teacher's union members for
organizing a visit by Education Minister
Gerard Kennedy earlier this fall.
"At this board, there's an underlying
principle of respect and concern and dignity.
And that permeates through the whole
system," Townsend said.
Also attending the meeting -- which was
sandwiched between an earlier spiritual
celebration and a later reception -- were a
couple of dozen principals..
Both Townsend and Murray offered praise
for their work.
"We are, indeed. fortunate here in this
board," the newly -acclaimed Murray said.
"We have seen how great (the principals) are
over the years but it seems to me that they
keep getting better and better. And I don't
know how they do that, but they do."
Also at the inaugural meeting, other board
responsibilities were distributed among the
remaining four trustees.
Mike Miller of South Huron will serve as
vice -chair, Vincent McInnes of North
Perth/Northeast Huron will chair the
management committee, Marcy will chair the
education committee, and Mary -Catherine
McKeon of Northwest Huron will chair the
personnel committee.
