Morgan, Kevin and Cody Bennewies, of Seaforth, have to settle for playing minor hockey and leafing through their
extensive NHL memorabilia collection as this year's NHL lock -out continues.
Local hockey fans still hoping
for a season for the NHL pros

With no NHL hockey
expected this season because
of a league -imposed lockout,
local fans of the sport have
had to come up with some
activities to fill their
Saturday evenings.
While it might not be the
same without Hockey Night
in Canada, some are using
their free night, to spend
some more time with their
families.
"I know the guys (his three
boys) miss watching them on
TV," Kevin Bennewies,
Toronto Maple Leafs fan,
said. "They learn off the pro
players. Watching all their
different moves ... and try
and imitate those guys."
Chicago Blackhawks fan
Marc Robinet, of Seaforth,
said that since the lockout
began he's been watching
movies with his family on
Saturday nights.
Although daughters do not
watch hockey, Robinet said
that they miss hearing the
scores of the games.
Luke Vick, a centre for the
St. Marys Lincolns, said that
when he returns home from
his own hockey games on
Saturday nights it just isn't
the same without seeing the
pros playing on 1'V.
"It's just fun to watch
because you always dream
about going to the NHL,"
Vick said. "Watching it on
TV is probably one of the
closest things to making it."
Toronto Maple Leafs fan
Pete Martene said although
he does not miss Hockey
Night in Canada, he would
start watching it again when
the lockout is settled.
As of today (Wednesday),
the lockout has lasted 105
days since it began in
September when the NHL
and team owners were
looking to insure cost
certainty and restructure the
league.
"They've got to do
something," said Martene.
"It's way out of hand. You
and I can't afford to go to
games. They're getting so
much money."
"I can't afford it (tickets)
at $175 a crack," he said.
Vick said that he doesn't
agree with a salary cap for
NHL players.
"It's kind of stupid. It's a
professional sport. They
shouldn't have to lock it out
just because people aren't
happy with the money
situation," Vick said.
Robinet said that the NHL
is running a business and the
way it is set up is not what
their industry can afford.
"If you own something and
it's not making any money,
you try and fix it," Robinet
said. "I think that's what they
are trying to do and the
players need to eventually
accept that these are the
times."

Owners paying large
salaries, Robinet said, was
part of the problem.
"I think both sides are to
blame. I think the owners put
themselves in this mess, but
now they are trying to fix it."
Bennewies agrees, but said
that if he were a player he'd
like to make as much money
as he could.
"They do make too much
as it is, but mind you if I was
in the their shoes I'd
probably be the same way,"
Bennewies said. "We all
want to make as much
money as we can. It's just
our nature."
Martene said that he thinks
that some players in the NHL
are "overpaid big sucks."
"It's just got way out of
hand. They have not idea
what money is, I don't
think," said Martene. "It's
not just hockey, it's all
professional sports."
"I think a majority of the
population agrees that the
players are overpaid- way
over paid," Martene said.
Since the lockout began,
the players' union and the
league have only met twice
to discuss the situation.
"I wish it would come
back. There's still a little
hope here they'll play yet
this year," said Bennewies,
adding that he would like to
see at least half a season
played. "Hopefully it'll
happen."
