Ryan hoping skate
park will soon
be outdoor rink
From Page 1
thought the weather would not cooperate with the
building of an outdoor rink before January.
"Who knew we would get such a freeze last week? It
will be a go shortly," he said last Thursday.
Ryan said hockey will not be allowed at the outdoor
rink because of the close proximity of cars in the town
hall parking lot.
"For public safety, it's just be for pleasure skating
only. We don't need pucks going into the buildings or
people's back yards," he said.
Anyone interested in volunteering for the
maintenance of the skating rink can call Ryan at 522-

Training for Brussels firefighters questioned
By Susan Hundertmark
Expositor Editor
Whether or not to allow
First Response training to
Brussels firefighters was
tabled by Huron East council
at its Dec. 14 meeting.
Brussels Coun. David
Blaney asked that the
suggestion be tabled until
Huron East Fire Chief Marty
Bedard can present more
statistics about the number
of times it's necessary for
firefighters to have more
medical training.
Bedard asked council to
provide $8,000 for training
20 firefighters (at $25 an
hour for a 16 hour course)
along with $5,000 'for
equipment and supplies in
the 2005 budget.
He said the training was
necessary because,
ambulance response times
are longer in the Brussels
area and five out of 15 calls
this year involved medical
situations.
"The coverage area is
different in Brussels. We
don't have the same medical
calls in Seaforth," said
Bedard.
Bedard said that while
Brussels firefighters are
currently trained in basic
first aid and CPR, the further
training would teach them
how to prepare patients for
transport to a hospital and
clear patients' airways.
Grey Coun. Mark Beaven
asked how necessary the
further training would be for
Brussels when Huron East is
already paying Huron
County for ambulance
services and the Blyth Fire
Department for First
Response coverage.
"Is it just going to be one
in a hundred situations
where the firefighters have to
be trained further when the
ambulance is just a minute or
two away?" asked Beaven.
"What increase in ability
will we be getting and what
will be required before the
ambulance gets there?" he
added.
Seaforth Coun. Joe Steffler
said he didn't have a
problem with more
firefighter training but was
concerned about ambulance
response times.
"Eight thousand dollars is
cheap if it saves one life," he
said.
McKillop Coun. Sharon
McClure wanted to know
how many other fire
departments in the area are
trained in First Response.
Bedard responded that
Blyth is the only Huron
County fire department but
the majority of Perth County
fire departments are trained.
Grey Coun. Alvin
McLellan wondered how
expensive annual
recertification might cost
after the initial training is
complete.
Bedard gues$ed that a
four-hour recertification
might cost $1,000 a year.
