Skating with the 'starsat hockey camp
By Jason Middleton
Expositor Staff
During their Christmas break,
Seaforth and area hockey players aged
six to 13 got a chance to strap up their
skates and face off against some local
hockey stars in the Hockey Skills
Camp at the Seaforth and District
Community Centre.
St. Marys Lincolns junior B hockey
players, Luke Vick, 19, of Seaforth,
and 16 -year-old Mike McLaughlin, of
Harpurhey, are helping to organize this
year's camp.
"It basically gives them the
fundamentals of the game, pass shoot
and a lot of skating drills," said Vick.
Along with McLaughlin and Vick are
a gang of local hockey players
including bantam Mitchell Meteors
Sarah Johnston, AAA Bantam Huron -
Perth Lakers Mark Hazeleger, Curtis
Bartlis and Todd Gates as well as St.
Marys Lincolns' player Matt Dalton.
OHL'ers Tyler Doig, of the Guelph
Storm, and Cal O'Reilly, of the
Windsor Spitfire, also helped teach
some skills at the camp.
O'Reilly said that it feels good giving
back to the community that helped him
get where he is now.
"They (the hockey community) put a
lot of money into me," O'Reilly said.
"Gave me free ice time and stuff. I get
to give back and thank them for what
they've done."
Matt Dalton, 18, of Clinton, said that
he really enjoys helping the kids out.
"They get to come out and it gives
them something to do during the
Christmas holidays," Dalton said.
It also gives the kids good exercise, a
chance to make friends and somewhere
to learn about hockey and improve
their skills, Dalton said.
Approximately 40 kids were involved
in the first session of the Christmas
break hockey camp which ran from
Monday to Wednesday of this week.
The kids learned about power
skating, stick skills, puck control and
participated in dry land training.
"I played all my minor hockey in

Seaforth. It's just kind of a way to give
back to the kids that are playing their
minor hockey here," said Dalton.
"We're lucky enough to play junior B
hockey."
Vick said that he remembers
participating in a similar hockey camp
at the arena when future NHL'ers like
Boyd Devereaux helped kids develop
their skills.
A friend invited Jeff Decorte, 11, of
RR 2 Seaforth, to come to the camp
and he said that he likes it "because
you get to do drills and play hockey."
Ray Huether, 10, said that his
favourite part of the hockey camp is
being able to be on the ice with the
"stars," playing

"Last year was bang on. We have

just really a lot of fun for the kids,"

Centre employee Kathy Huether.
Last week Huether met with camp
instructors to discuss how the camp
