Hospital study group, mayor
meet with MPP Carol Mitchell
By Susan Hundertmark
Expositor Editor
Both Huron East Mayor
Joe Seili and hospital study
group member Ken Larone
say they left a recent
meeting with Huron -Bruce
MPP Carol Mitchell feeling
optimistic about the future of
Seaforth Community
Hospit':l.
"She guaranteed me that
no hospitals in rural Ontario
are closing," Seili reported
back to council last Tuesday.
Seili and Seaforth Coun.
Joe Steffler joined the
hospital study group on
Dec.I0 when they met with
Mitchell to update her on
their findings so far about
the Seaforth community's
feelings about their hospital
and their plans for further
research.
"We tried to impress upon
her that it seemed
unfortunate that local
medical services are being
cut back when the
community is looking at its
best growth in three or four
decades," said Larone in a
phone interview after the
meeting.
He was referring to the
Bridges' development in
Egmondville, whose future
is linked with the health of
SCH's future.
Larone said that now that
Mitchell has heard the
group's finding so far that he
hopes she'll represent
Seaforth's interests to Health
Minister George
Smitherman.
"She's our window into
the ministry," he said.
"We didn't ask for a specific
commitment but at least if
we need one now, we've
explained our story to her."
"It's in our interest to keep
her informed and I think
she's doing us a service by
showing her interest," said
Larone. •
Both Seili and Larone are
also optimistic about the
findings of the third phase of
the study group's research, a
telephone survey of at least
10 per cent of the population
of Huron East.
The group spent most of
last week phoning Huron
East ratepay ers from
Seaforth's town hall,
Vincent's Farm Equipment
and McGavin Farm Supply
to reach residents throughout
the municipality.
Seili encouraged council
to support the study group's
efforts and to encourage
ratepayers to participate in
the survey.
"I've been spending time
with the study group and I
hope council's backing me
on this," he said.
"If your ratepayers are
called, make sure they
answer the questions. The
more that answer the
questions, the better," said
Seili.
He added that the findings
of the study group will be
presented to the Seaforth
local advisory committee of
the Huron -Perth Healthcare
Alliance and then to the
Alliance board.
