Huron East's
roads in question
By Susan Hundertmark

Whether or not enough
money is being spent on
winter road maintenance was
the subject of debate at Huron
East council's Dec. 14
meeting.
Seaforth Coun. Joe Steffler
told council that it needs to
take a serious look at the
amount of money spent on
keeping the roads clear of
snow and ice during budget
talks in the new year.
"The roads weren't fit to
drive on yesterday. They were
really slippery and that's not
acceptable at this time of
year," he told council last
Thesday.
"If we've got paved roads,
then we have to salt and sand
them. Otherwise, we're just
waiting for an accident in
'Hur+on East," he said.
But, several councillors
disagreed with Steffler, saying
the Public Works department
does a great job keeping the
roads clean.
"I'd sooner drive down our
roads than Highway 8.
They're salted and sanded all
the time," said McKillop
Coun. Ferg Kelly.
McKillop Coun. Sharon
McClure said she thought
ratepayers are happy with the
condition of their paved roads.
But, she added that drivers
have to take some
responsibility too.
"People have to drive for the
conditions. They're not
slowing down," she said.
Grey Coun. Mark Beaven
defended Huron East's roads
as "some of the best
maintained roads in the
province," adding that he
drives throughout the province
for his job.
Seaforth Coun. Lou
Maloney said he doesn't think
Huron East could improve its
road maintenance much.
"As long as we keep salting
and sanding the corners, we're
fine," he said.
Brussels Coun. David
Blaney asked if Huron East is
doing a sufficient job plowing
and sanding the roads to
defend itself in court, if
necessary.
And, both Steffler and
Public Works coordinator John
Forrest said no.
"We meet highway
standards 90 per cent of the
year but we'd need another
shift to meet the standard the
whole time," said Steffler.
Forrest offered that part of
the problem on some
municipal paved roads is that
higher traffic volumes are
using them than was intended
and he suggested lowering
speed limits to divert traffic
back onto the local highways.
He pointed to roads such as
Airport Road, which
commuters use to avoid
Highway 8.
"In Perth County; they've
lowered the speed limits from
80 to 70 km/h to get people
back on the highway," he said.
"And, in Fullarton, there's a
stop sign on every corner,"
added Maloney.

Christmas 2004 Newsletter
The H.E./ Seaforth Community Development Trust consists of councilors Joe
Steffler and Lou Maloney and appointees Alf Ross, Jim Sills, Doug Elliott, Maureen Agar.
Dave Prezcator has moved to Stratford and has been replaced by Bill Teall. The Chair is
Joe Steffler and Secretary is Doug Elliott.
The H.E./Seaforth Community Development Trust has continued to accomplish
many beneficial things for the community of Seaforth and its citizens. The Seaforth Post
Office building has a new side door to allow the use of the beautiful wood staircase. New
windows were placed in the rented apartment on the third floor. Canada Post renovations
make the Post Office area a wonderful, bright place to meet on a daily basis to pass the
time. A light has been placed at the back of the Post Office building to keep the area safe
and clean.
The new Community Care Access Centre facility is up and running. Outside
landscaping is finished. An open house for the centre was held in September and was a
great success.
Seaforth now has its own website! The Trust helped implement our own site with
E.D.O. Ralph Laviolette. Check out the website at www.townofseaforth.ca. We also
participated in a study for Huron East signage with Mr. Laviolette. Hopefully in the future
we will see some attractive signs around Seaforth.
Seaforth is going to be rocking on July 29, 30, and
31st of 2005 as the Trust helped support the 'Come Home to
the Country' Festival. It's time for Seaforth to have another
great get-together!
The Trust donated money to a group of youth of
Seaforth who enjoy skateboarding. It already has been used
extensively...they have actually worn out some of their
ramps already! JULY 29-31, 2005
The Huron East/Seaforth Community Development
Trust awarded Cheryl Steffler the contract as property manager for The Trust real estate
holdings.
The Trust donated $100,000.00 to the Hospital Foundation Trust to help finance
the re -vamping of our medical clinic and recruiting doctors. Advertisement money was
also donated to the group of Ken Larone, Maureen Spittal, and Dr. Ken Rodney to help
with their work concerning our hospital. The Trust feels that we all need to take an active
role in supporting these groups. If we work together the town of Seaforth will continue to
have a clinic and hospital that is the envy of other communities.
We are happy to report that The Trust has donated in excess of $125,000.00 to
various groups and projects during 2004.
Our meetings are still on the first Thursday of every month.
