Telephone survey results echoing
focus groups' support of SCH
By Susan Hundertmark

Results from a Huron East -wide
phone survey are echoing the strong
support for Seaforth Community
Hospital shown in earlier focus groups
and a newspaper survey, says Ken
Larone, a member of the hospital study
group.
Fifteen callers spent last Tuesday
and Thursday evenings from Seaforth's
town hall, Vincent's Farm Equipment
and McGavin Farm Supply calling 10
per cent of the population of each of
Huron East's five wards.
"There are no surprises so far. It's
encouraging," says Larone of his first
glance at the results Monday.
He says residents of the Brussels
area actually called the survey office in
Walton asking to participate in the
survey.
"They'd heard from their neighbours
that the calling was happening," he
says.
Brussels residents were asked
whether they used the hospital in
Wingham, Listowel or Seaforth.
"The Brussels region is much more
complex than Seaforth," he says.
A municipality -wide question from
respondents was how the accounting
system works within the Alliance.
"People are really concerned with
• how the costs and revenues are
handled within the Alliance. They
really want to understand," says
Larone.
He says the phone survey may
require one more night of calling to be
complete.
He expects to tabulate the results
between Christmas and New Year.
"Then we want to start determining
what the results suggest because we'd
like to establish the answers to our
nine questions," says Larone.
The focus group's nine questions
include what does it take to build a
strong team of doctors, have our
doctors expressed their needs and
expectations and is the Alliance
overwhelmed trying to operate four
hospitals at the same time when there
is a serious doctor and funding
shortage.
Also, questions include should

Fire levels Dublin house
By Andy Bader
Mitchell Advocate Editor
A Dublin mother of three
teenagers has lost all her
house's contents - including
Christmas presents - after a
fire engulfed her home
Sunday afternoon.
"There's nothing there but
a hole in the ground," said
Michelle Sinnamon Monday,
referring to her home at
6993 Line 34, at the corner
of Highway 8 and Mill
Street.
Sinnamon was not home at
the time of the blaze,
reported at 3:52 p.m., but her
16 -year-old son Brent
('Digger') and his girlfriend
were.
Sinnamon said Brent
heard popping and cracking
noises and saw smoke, and
after going to his sister
Sharlena's bedroom upstairs,
it was too far gone to stop it
from spreading.
"It went up extremely
fast," Sinnamon said, adding
that "somebody was
watching out for him"
because Brent is hard of
hearing and his room is
directly underneath where
the blaze began.
The two occupants
escaped with the clothes they
were wearing. Everything
else was lost.
The cause of the blaze is
unknown, reported West
Perth Fire Chief Bill Elliott,
and likely may never be
known.
"[The fire] was well on its
way when we arrived," he
said.
No one was injured,
although the family pets -
including a five-year-old
black lab - perished.
"We're a strong family,
we'll get through it,"
Sinnamon said, who works
as a monitor at St. Patrick's
School in Dublin and
volunteers occasionally at
the West Perth Youth Centre.
She wanted to assure all
the school children "that
we're okay" and is anxious
to see them once school re-
starts in January.
Sinnamon recalled a
similar major accident which
struck the family a number
of years ago, when a vehicle
drove into their house when
they lived in Avonton.
Also living with Michelle
were her 18 -year-old son
Kurt, and 15 -year-old
daughter Sharlena.
Arrangements have been
made to have the teens stay
with friends for thr; time
being.
A bank account has been
established for people to
make financial donations for
the family at the Mitchell
branch of Scotiabank (348-
8469), located at 66 Ontario
Rd.
Firefighters were on the
scene for four hours, and
were assisted by the Huron
East fire department.
Perth County OPP
attended the scene and
provided traffic control.
