Workplace festive celebrations are part of the season as are many family parties and gatherings. Children are busy preparing for the big day, counting the "sleeps" until the arrival of Santa Claus. St. Columban parish hall was the gathering place for area Knights of Columbus as they travelled from Zurich, Goderich, Brussels and surrounding areas for their annual Christmas party. Four young parishioners from St. Columban parish received the sacrament of St. Columban confirmation in a recent celebration at St. Patrick's Church in Dublin. Erin Cronin, fan Murray, Kevin Cronin and Katie Ryan were surrounded, along with the other candidates, by parents, family members, relatives, neighbours and friends, as the sacrament was conferred by Bishop Fabbro. The Grade Five and Six students at St. Columban School also received the sacrament of reconciliation for the first time in a school celebration. The students are preparing for their Advent Mass to be held in St. Patrick's Church in Dublin, in preparation for Christmas. The reviews have been good for the St. Patrick's/St. Columban's School Christmas C.D. which is now being distributed. The church choirs of St. Patrick's, St. Vincent de Paul, and St. Columban also contributed to the Christmas CD. Joseph Patrick Moylan, son of Pat and Deb Moylan, was surrounded by family members and relatives as Father Gordon Kennedy celebrated mass and baptized him at a recent celebration in St. Columban Church. Joseph's godparents were Michael Moylan and Kathleen Moylan. Also in attendance were his grandparents, Rita Moylan, and Bill and Grace Campbell. Ron and Mary Ryan have spoken via telephone with their son, Corporal Joe Ryan, who returned to Winnipeg from a six-month tour of duty with other members of the Canadian Armed Forces. They served in a support capacity with the special forces in Afghanistan in "Operation Athena," the name given the mission. Joe is welcomed home by his wife, Paula, son Brent, and daughters, Megan and Erin. By Mary Ryan Legion hosts children's Christmas party Cribbage has gotten off to a good start with six tables. The euchre had 11 tables out last Wednesday. If it keeps growing as it normally does, we will have to enlarge the hall. The ladies have taken on the task of providing for us on Friday nights. Last Sunday afternoon was the children's Christmas party Seaforth Legion with some very talented children taking part. From the organizers' point of view there is much more talent out there who could have taken part but it could have been the weather. The New Year's Eve tickets are going well. There are only 16 days till the year ends. Don't get left out. This Thursday night is the general meeting at 8 p.m. This is another reminder to come out and support your executive members who are working hard to keep the branch afloat from month to month. Also there is a chance to meet your new bartender "Rick whatshisname." Hello to our shut-ins, from all at home or in the Manor or Maplewood. At the going down of the sun and in the morning we will remember them. By Errol Skilender Looking like Christmas at Queensway It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas at Queensway Nursing and Retirement Home in Hensall due to the decorating efforts of several staff, especially Bev Hedden who is particularly gifted at transforming our Christmas trees into beautiful themed visions. The Retirement Home staff and residents held a decorating bee on their floor complete with refreshments last week to' "spruce" up for Christmas. Lisa Stewart, music therapist spent Monday morning with residents working her musical magic with a small group and several individual residents. Lisa provides a very valuable therapy, in that music reaches many people unable to benefit from other programs. Queensway's volunteer auxiliary met Tuesday morning to preview December events and offer their assistance wherever needed. The Meals on Wheels program especially would be difficult to provide without these dedicated women who deliver Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The Rev. John Tremulak of Dashwood Lutheran Church led worship Tuesday, for residents with Belva Fuss as volunteer organist. In the evening Exeter Gospel Singers visited with an inspiring presentation of sacred music. Volunteer Marg Cole spent her Wednesday afternoon organizing the card games for our euchre enthusiasts.
