New Huron County warden
no stranger to county politics
By Tim Cumming
Signal -Star Staff
Huron County has a new
warden but Doug Layton, of
North Huron, is no stranger to
county politics.
Outgoing warden Bill
Dowson, of Bluewater, handed
over power to Layton in a
ceremony packed full of
rituals in a county council
chambers packed full of
family members, friends and
staff on Tuesday, Dec. 7.
Ben Van Diepenbeek, of
Ashfield-Colborne-
Wawanosh, nominated Layton
for the position. Layton was
the only name put forward so
no election was required.
Van Diepenbeek praised
Layton as "a thoughtful
decision maker" whose
leadership is "founded on
solid and enduring values." He
praised the first reeve of North
Huron . as a family man, a
business man (Layton runs a
funeral home) and someone
who has been active in
community service.
Dowson placed the chain of
office on the incoming
warden's neck and also
presented him with the
Warden's Pin, the ceremonial
Key of Office and a gavel.
Rector Allan Livingstone, of
St. George's Anglican Church
in Goderich and Christ
Church, Port Albert, spoke at
the ceremony and shared a
lesson about how Solomon
told God he wanted not
material possessions or power,
but good judgment in
governing over his people and
was granted that wisdom by
God.
Livingstone prayed for the
warden, the county council
and county staff.
Layton said it was an
honour to be named warden.
"What an honour it is for me
to be able to sit in this chair,"
he said.
It will be a challenge, he
said, to match the leadership
of the previous wardens of the
County of Huron.
"I'll have an uphill battle to
do the job they did but I'm
certainly going to try," he said.
There will be many
challenges during his term, he

predicted, but "if we meet
each challenge and work as a
team we can overcome
(them)."
Following the ceremony
handing over the reigns of
power, the county's committee
memberships were struck.
Later, there was a reception
held at the Bedford Hotel.
Dowson said the highlight
of his term as warden was
travelling around the county
and seeing the work of
community organizations,
volunteers and charities in the
county.
He said one of the
challenges the new warden
will face is balancing demands
for county services and the
need to keep county spending
in line.
"We're going to have a
tough budget again," he said.
Although keeping taxes
down will be a challenge
Dowson said the county is in
good shape and he praised the
current staff.
"We have as good a staff as
we ever have."
