Proposed hospital cutbacks will
result in more deaths, says doctor

would have been necessary had the situation worsened.
David has been treated urgently and competently on two
subsequent bee sting events since that time.
1 have had a dislocated shoulder set, and our youngest son
Peter has been treated for serious pneumonia at the Seaforth
hospital.
I've learned that this state-of-the-art facility provides
pharmacy, laboratory testing, radiology imaging, two
operating suites, and a helipad to serve the Huron East rural
community.
I was recently surprised and disappointed to discover that
the Seaforth hospital is facing the threat of significant
cutbacks. These cutbacks are depicted as a simple reduction
in the number of beds available for acute and chronic care.
However, this reduction will surely be tied to the
elimination of other necessary services such as laboratory,
blood bank, radiology, and surgical capability that are
necessary for a fully -functional community urgent care
facility in a rural setting.
Numerous studies in the trauma literature have proven the
benefit of providing urgent care quickly following serious
injury or illness; this has been termed the "golden hour."
The golden hour refers to the brief interval during which
patients must be stabilized before transporting to a tertiary
care facility. Airways must be secured; bleeding must be
stopped acutely prior to transport.
I have always admired the equality of the Canadian
healthcare system. Why should metropolitan health care
services be superior to those available in rural communities?
The Seaforth hospital is a modern, state-of-the-art facility
necessary for the health care of Huron East residents.
Losing, or downscaling, this essential fully -functional
facility would be a tragedy and a tremendous step backward
considering what we have learned about urgent care.
The results of the proposed cutbacks are predictable.
People will not receive timely care. People will die.

not happy with what's going on.
Also, please send a copy to Premier McGuinty. After all,
he's the guy who promised us better health care over one
year ago. Please don't say you're too busy. Just think how
busy you will be if you have to travel farther for all your
health care needs!
Please attend the public meeting of Seaforth Hospital

who got the ball rolling - Dr. Ken Rodney, Maureen Spittal

P.S. We should also remind the Huron Perth Hospital

Stratford citizens when they objected to travelling out of
town to visit their loved ones.
