Huron East council has questions
for Alliance and its Seaforth reps
From Page 1
turned into a satellite rather than a full partner of the Alliance.
"They didn't want to hear that we're a satellite. Well, if not,
put up - give us a'role. Until they do, we're not a partner," he
said.
Rodney suggested that if SCH can become an "escape
valve" for surgery waiting lists in Stratford, it will be in a
similar position to Clinton's hospital, which is "an escape
valve for cataract surgery in London."
"They have five or six surgeons in Stratford and everyone's
got a long waiting list," he said.
Tuckersmith Coun. Larry McGrath said he's worried that
each service taken out of SCH is "slowly killing us."
"It gives them grounds at the end of the day to close us.
They're setting the tone and we have to stop that," he said.
McKillop Coun. Ferg Kelly asked if Seaforth's
representatives on the Alliance board are speaking up on
Seaforth's behalf.
"It's important to have the two Bobs (Seaforth
representatives on the Alliance board, Bob Broadfoot and
Bob Norris) here so we can ask them. They're probably doing
their best but maybe their best isn't good enough," said
Seaforth Coun. Lou Maloney.
"My interpretation is the local advisory committee (to the
Alliance) isn't doing its job," said Brussels Coun. David
Blaney.
"They're our only in to the Alliance and if they can't be
moved, then neither can the Alliance. They're the ones we
need to have a word with, sharply," he said. •
Tony Van den Hengel, a member of the Seaforth LAC who
was in the audience, responded that most of the members of
the advisory committee are new and inexperienced.
"You do realize that the Alliance is using you for an
excuse," Blaney told him.
McGrath suggested council needs a meeting with the whole
Alliance board.
"We don't realize how things are being pulled away little by
little. The bottom line is we did not know," he said.
Rodney pointed out that very few members of the Seaforth
community present themselves as volunteers for the Alliance
board or for the local advisory committee.
"I've met people at the post office and asked if they've
filled out their questionnaire and they say, 'No, but you're
looking after it,"' he said.
Mayor Joe Seili agreed, pointing out that the same situation
is happening with other volunteer boards in Huron East.
"People were complaining about the arena (in Seaforth) and
we got one person volunteering to sit on the arena board," he
said.
Seili suggested that the Seaforth community should flood
Huron -Bruce MPP Carol Mitchell's office with their concerns
about cuts to SCH.
"I met with Carol Mitchell and I heard that she hadn't had
that many phone calls about the hospital. If they don't have a
lot of calls, it falls on deaf ears with (provincial health
minister) Smitherman," he said.
"They're (the province is) taking over $1 million from the
local economy (with the new health tax) and cutting services
at the same time," said Seili.
Hospital funding formula biggest
threat to small hospitals, says Williams
From Page 1
Williams says Seaforth is continuing to
offer surgery with visits from Dr. Randy
Gonser and Dr. Cheryl Hillyer and he
identifies Seaforth's emergency ward as
an essential service offered by SCH.
"Emergency is an essential service at
the top of my list. I don't believe you
need a comprehensive array of services
to stay viable," he says, responding to
concerns in the Seaforth community that
it is not offering enough services to stay
open in the long run.
"We have to identify what makes
sense to our four sites and build on what
we have now. Our goal is to have four
viable sites," he says.
While the province has identified
MRI, cancer, cardiac, cataracts and hips
and knee replacement as its top
priorities to reduce waiting lists,
Williams says Seaforth hospital does
not have to offer one of those services to
continue operating as a viable hospital.
"There is so much more we do than
that," he says.
"We might not have the same kind of
beds but they're important nonetheless.
We need the right mix for the demands
of the community," he says.
Williams says the province's funding
formula for hospitals is the biggest
current threat to small hospitals.
"The ministry (of health) is aware that
the funding formula is not going to
support small hospitals and we're
working at improving the funding
formula. The government is very clear
that they have no intention of closing
hospitals," he says.

A second part-time
doctor, Dr. Sean Emami,
began working at the
Seaforth Medical Clinic
on Monday.
"This will be the
primary place I'll practice
and I'll be here two days a
week but I'm also
practising at different
communities in rural
Southwestern Ontario," he
said Monday.
"I like the area," said
Emami.
Dr. Bill Milne also
beganworking at the
Seaforth clinic a month

While both have not
decided to take on any
permanent patients yet,
they are running an orphan
