Local junior
division
hockey players
hit the ice
across the area
By Jason Middleton

This hockey season,
several local' junior division
hockey players strapped on
their skates and headed to
play throughout
southwestern Ontario.
While some were hoping
to play on the almost
resurrected Seaforth
Centenaires, most have
settled with teams in Exeter
and Mitchell.
Earlier this year, a
proposal to start up the
Seaforth Centenaires, a
Junior D hockey team, was
turned down by the Ontario
Hockey Association's junior
development league.
Tyler Elligsen, a first-year
player with the Mitchell
Hawks, a Junior D team,
said that he was hoping that
the Centenaires would start
up again.
"I was kind of excited
because I thought they were
going to have a team and I
was going to play there,"
Elligsen said.
For the second year, Dave
Verberne, an 18 -year-old
from Egmondville is also
playing on the Mitchell
Hawks.
Verberne said that he was
"kind of was looking
forward to the Cents
(Centenaires) getting back
up and running."
Although Elligsen said
that he recognizes some
Seaforth faces in the crowd
at the Hawks games, he
suggested that more local
support would be great.
"Some people that used to
come watch the Cents don't
have anybody to watch,"
Elligsen said. "They can
come down to Mitchell and
watch because we have a lot
of local people playing."
Other Seaforth-area
players on the Mitchell
Hawks include Stephen
Henderson, 19, Daryl
Hulley, 16, and Barry
Young, 19.
For 16 -year-old Mike
McLaughlin, of Harpurhey,
and 19 -year-old Greg
McGrath, of Egmondville,
this is the first season
they've played Junior B
hockey and they're finding
it a little different than what
they are used to.
For the last two years,
McGrath played on the
Junior C Wingham Ironmen.
"For me it's a learning
experience. I've never
played Junior B, so it's a
whole new level of hockey,"
McGrath said. "I'm just
adapting to it and I feel like
I'm doing fairly well."
For McLaughlin, he said
that playing on the Lincolns
is a "big step up" from
playing two years with the
Huron -Perth Lakers.
McGrath said that he has
been finding that he has to
think a bit faster with the
faster level of play in the
Junior B division.
"It's just a higher intensity
level of hockey," he said.
Luke Vick, of Seaforth, a
centre with the Lincolns,
said that this is his second
year with the team after
being traded mid-season to
the team last year.
Vick said that he enjoys
playing on the Lincolns.
"I love it. It's a great
place to play. Our coaching
staff is really great," said
Vick. "You get treated so
well down there."
Two other local hockey
players — Joe Nesbitt and
Darcy McCutcheon — are
'playing on the Exeter
Hawks Junior D team.
Sports keep
students busy
Family
members,
relatives,

neighbours
and friends gathered in St.
Columban Church to mourn
the loss of Luella Murphy,
wife of Bill Murphy. Father
Joe Hardy, along with Father
Lance Magdziak con-
celebrated the Mass of
Christian Burial.
Father Hardy, in describing
Luella as petite but mighty,
told of her faithfulness and
expertise where she was
parish secretary. Luella also
served on the St. Columban
cemetery board for 30 years,
receiving a special award
from London Diocese for her
excellent service.
A grandmother -to -be, she
leaves behind her husband,
Bill Murphy, son Kevin
Murphy, and daughters,
Karen Murphy, London, and
Janet and Todd Lichty,
Waterloo.
The Grade 7 and 8
students at St. Columban
School have been preparing
to receive the sacrament of
Confirmation, which will be
held at St. Patrick's Church
in Dublin on Dec. 1. In
performing community
service as part of their
preparation for
Confirmation, they put on a
talent show for residents at
Ritz Lutheran Villa in
Mitchell.
In recent furthering of
their school studies, the
Grade 8 class travelled to
Stratford, where they
participated in a Tech Day
held at St. Michael High
School. They explored the
different
tech
departments,
learning
about mechanics,
transportation and
construction.
They also attended the
Seaforth careers' symposium
held at the Agriplex. There
they could ask questions of
the people at the various
tables and check out the
books and pamphlets
describing different careers
available to them.
Sports activities have kept
the students busy. In recent
flag football tournament
play, held at St. Anne's in
Clinton, the St. Columban
girls' and boys' seniors
placed first.
The Grade 5 and 6 co-ed
hockey team enjoyed a
hockey tournament in
Mitchell.
In zone volleyball play, the
St. Columban boys' team
hosted the zone play, while
the girls' team travelled to
Kinkora. Both teams won
their respective tournaments.
Two recent theme days
included a chocolate bar day,
when everyone satisfied their
sweet tooth, and a "Pyjama
Day," where everyone came
to school in their P.J.s. Prizes
were given for the class with
the most participants.
A number of local people,
decked out in reindeer
antlers and Santa hats, and
accompanied by Tom
Melady on the guitar,
serenaded the residents at the
Ritz Lutheran Villa as they
and their family members
enjoyed Christmas dinner.
